I've been playing around with Missouri Bullet Co's .430" 240gr RNFP with an advertised BHN of 18. My hope was to put together a fun to shoot load similar to a .44 S&W special. I have tried 5 and 6 grains of TiteGroup with these bullets in a late 90's Ruger Vaquero and had terrible leading. I don't know if I'd have the same issue with magnum loads using this bullet. I have read that TiteGroup burns hot, and can melt the back of the bullet or push past it if it is too hard, and that sometimes a slower powder such as 2400, H110, or 5744 may help reduce the leading issues. I put together some loads using the same bullet coated with Lee liquid Alox over 6 gr of Trail Boss. A lot less leading, but still some. Not sure if the reduced leading should be attributed to the Alox or powder, or both. I've been using Missouri Bullet's 405gr .459" bullets in my 1895xlr with no noticeable leading.

I've found, what appears to be, a good deal on Laser Cast .431" (slightly larger than the Missouri Bullet's) 240gr SWC; $85 per thousand. My question is, would using the Laser Cast bullets help me out, or is there something else I should try? I hate to pass up this deal if the Laser Cast bullets are better, but at the same time don't really want to spend the money if I'm going to have the same issues.

Thoughts?

You most probably got that terrible leading because the bullet you are loading is to hard for the load. 18 BHN is too hard for the pressure you are generating to expand the base if the bullet and seal off tge hot gasses from melting tge side of the bullet. Use those 18 BHN bullets for the .44 Magnum and order some 12 BHN bullets for the .44 Special. If for some reason you are still having leading problems go to a coated bullet and they will disappear.

Laser Cast bullets are even harder and will probably cause even more leading in the .44 Special than you are now getting.

Thanks ArchAngel; I had considered softer bullets as an option. I'll load some magnums with the 18BHN's and see what happens.
