Bah. Another wacko with a deathwish.

The problem is we take someone who just killed X number of people and critically wounded Y number more of people, and we throw them in a jail cell, and we allow them to suck air for 2 or 3 decades while appeals runs through.

What needs to be fixed isn't the criminals, but our handling of the criminals.

"Dude, you got caught red-handed with weapons AT the scene of the crime where you just shot 60 people."

    "Yeah, so?"

"Execution at 7 PM, broadcast all channels."

    Done and done.

The copycats are out there. This guy sounds like he had devised quite the plan and he obviously wanted to get mass casualties.

Stay focused, stay vigilant, and don't let these bastards keep you from enjoying life. This guy needs more than prison time and some warm and fuzzy counseling.

Luckily his mother wasn't one of those types who believes their son could never do anything like that. Otherwise there probably would have been another Aurora.

It never fails. There is always an idiot that thinks that the tragedy they saw was a good idea. Perhaps if our media kept these things a little less sensational, they would attract less attention. Before the internet we didn't have this instant response to everything that happened, "the same types of crimes have happened 20 years ago" , but not as many people found out about them as quicklly. Today its such a rush to get ratings due to falling revenues that a story like this makes the agencies a heck of a lot of money to keep replaying the same footage over and over again.
What the heck were all of these crazies doing 10 years ago, what made them so off balance? Back in my fathers day, people just didn't act like this, we went wrong someware.

What do you do, legally, to a person who showed that sort of intent?

this is going to lead to an increase of movie patrons carrying guns regardless of the gun buster signs. People where shaken after the first one and now a copycat they are not going to feel that the movie house is going to do its part and supply ample security

It looks like they charged him with three offenses, including making a terroristic threat and first degree assault. I don't know how Missouri's assault laws are worded, but apparently they can be charged for enough significant acts to constitute an attempt or conspiracy.

Is that really going to be a deterrent for schizophrenics and other irrational actors? I personally don't think it's going to be very effective at making the crazy act sane.

With the Gifford and Colorado shootings (and various others), what would have been effective were if people acted on very significant red flags that suggested both those morons were threats to themselves and others. The problem is that there are so many crazy people out there, the signal to noise ratio is a mess and realistically most Americans (of whatever political leanings) are opposed to the concept of expanding government intrusion into things like mental health records, firearms and ammunition sales records, etc.

(And with quite a bit of justification -- as much as people get worked up by mass shootings and terrorist events, 2001 was the only year your odds of dying in some mass violence event exceeded your odds of being hit by lightning. But, once government gets to intrude into something, it does tend to find a way to stay intruded and to do something with that access or information.)

One of the things I love most about our system of government is due process. Due process in the Western world is where we differ substantially from everyone else.

Believe me, if you have not seen it for yourself, you probably do not want the government delivering rushed guilty verdicts or summarily executing people. That is truly a slippery slope.

    And this
The Eighth Amendment clearly prohibits this. It does not even strike me as odd any longer that many proponents of the Second Amendment often do not feel as strongly about the other rights in the Constitution.
