Model 12

Hi everyone!

I recently inherited an S&W model 12 .38 special Air Weight that belonged to my great grandfather. I'm sort of new to old firearms, so I just had a couple of questions if anybody can help me out.

Ok, I probably won't fire this revolver a whole lot, because of the sentimental value it holds to me...but suppose I do. I've heard that +P ammunition is a no-no in this model...is this true? Also, this particular gun was manufactured in the 50's...does anyone know what kind of value it holds...if any at all? It seems to be in good condition except for some scuffs and scratches and hasn't been fired much… that I know of. I’ve also attached a few pictures. If you have any other comments not pertaining to my questions…they are gladly accepted as well. Thanks in advance!!

Your Model 12 is a peach! Model 12 production began in 1957. If your's has a triggerguard screw, it was made before 1962. If there is no triggerguard screw, it's a post '62 gun.

It is true that you should avoid +P ammo. Some say to not shoot it much at all regardless. The flat latch, two inch barrel and round butt make your revolver especially nice. Your Model 12 was definitely a gun built for carry.

Value on Model 12s is really all over the book. SCS&W lists them at $220-370, with the $370 being NIB. I feel that price range should be adjusted, and most collectors would simply ignore it. There are simply not enough Model 12s in circulation to provide adequate data for compiling price lists. Your revolver is worth what someone is willing to pay at the time you are willing to sell. Until that time, it's market value is unknown. I do, however, feel it will fall between $300 and 400.

I agree. No +Ps, and somewhere between $300 and $400. I love those old Airweight 12s.
