Sorry no pics yet but the end of the saga of the in-operative Schofield Russian has finally come to and end.

After sending the Russian back to Stoeger in Maryland for repair around the first week in November I called to check the status of my gun. I was told that it was unrepairable and was destroyed, not exactly what I wanted to hear. I was assured that they would send me a replacement directly as soon as they became available, sometime in February!!

So...we did a little negotiation. The Schofield which I wanted in the first place was a Model 3 in 44-40 but I couldn't find one within my budget. Uberti customer service informed me that they had "One" in that configuration but that it would have to be sent to an FFL because it was different from the gun which I had sent them. My response, "Who Cares, send the thing!!" I supplied them with the name, address and phone of an FFL, which happened to be the shop that I had purchased the Russian from. The shop even graciously agreed to waive their paperwork fee. Big of them for a waranty replacement on a gun they sold in the first place don't ya think??

Anyway, so the shop has been notified in person and the new Schofield is enroute during the Christmas rush from Maryland to Arizona, what could go wrong!! As Bill Cosby once said, "Never challenge worse!"

On the appointed day that the Big Brown Truck was to arrive at the gun shop, I made a phone call to see if indeed the package had arrived. I was assured that it had but...since they didn't know who it belonged to they refused it!! It's not like it was a Taurus or a Glock for cryin' out load!! It's a Schofield, how many of these things to even gun shops see?? Not only that, the guy I was talking to was the same person that I had spoken to in person not five days previous and informed him of the plan. So once again I'm on the phone to Uberti customer service, this time explaining to somebody in Maryland that the gunshop that I had them send my gun to might have done pre-employment drug testing, but it had obviously not required potential employees to pass an I.Q. test!!

I've got to say this, Uberti/Stoeger customer service is TOP NOTCH!! Kelly the young lady I spoke to made the decision that since the paperwork on both guns said "Scofield" that the feds wouldn't mind if they sent it directly back to me and skipped the mentally incompetent middleman with the FFL license. Uberti/Stoeger was fantastic to deal with all the way around during this whole ordeal and I would highly recommend their product based solely on that.

Now all I have to do is work the bugs out of loading 44-40 Black Powder cartridges and we're set.

My limited experience loading 44-40 is that the cases are very thin and fragile. I had to use great care in seating and crimping the bullets.

Good Luck. Sounds like you are going to have some cold fun.

i load for a little sharps, a marlin 1894 cb,a winchester model 53 and a remington 14-1/2 in 44-40 and they are easy to load for, 8-10 grs unique and a 200 gr cast bullet. out of 1000,s of reloads i may have lost 15-20 cases, hell i have lost that many when shooting at game animals that i could not find in the leaves. go slow untill you get the knack of loading and you will be find, good luck eastbank.

I'm confused, do you have a "Schofield" or a "Russian"? They are both No # (frame size) but have different grip shapes and barrel latches.

Sounds cool! Myself, I'd love to have a Russian... and an Open Top Colt knock-off with a squared Navy style triggerguard and fake ivory grips.

Originally I had purchased a Schofield Russian and had problems with it. The original post is here. So in answer to your question, it's a Schofield Model 3 with a 5" barrel, chambered in 44-40 which I'm now going to have to not only learn to shoot, but apparently I'm going to have to learn how to finesse 44-40 BP cartridges on the loading press without screwing up the necks with the compression die.

RANGE REPORT? I want one. Tell us how it shoots.

I loaded up about 15 cartridges a few days before the Schofield arrived. I didn't want to go overboard like I did with the Russian and find out that this one wouldn't fire either. On Friday I went across the road from the RV park to my new favorite box canyon and set up my 30 yard target for a test fire.

Cartridges were loaded with 26gr 3f Swiss by weight and 15gr cornmeal by volume, .030 veggie wad and a 200gr RNFP lead bullet. I've got to get used to the odd (to me) rear sight apparently because I was shooting almost a foot low. But out of the dozenish rounds that I put through it, I think this is gonna be a fun pistolla to shoot. I took it out with me yesterday with the kids when we went ATVing but one of the guys with us tried to challenge physics and gravity on his quad and lost. We decided we needed to be closer to the road and a possible ambulance in the event he needed transport. Turns out, he got away with rolling twice at 40mph and being under the quad the first time around, but he ain't movin' too good this morning I'll bet.

I'm working on getting a Dodge City style holster for it and I think a set of ivory grips would look good too. Okay, probably fake ivory 'cause even if I could find the real ones I couldn't afford them.

I still think you are a bit confused as to what you really have there.

I'm not sure where I went wrong here. The post was intended to follow-up on a problem that I had experienced with a "Uberti" Schofield Russian. The "Uberti" part means that yes, it's a reproduction. Uberti calls it a No. 3 2nd Model.

The link you provided gives a decent, but short history of S&W's first big six-shooters and pics of some guns that nobody I know could afford, but we can all get eye-ball prints on them for free.

Since I haven't had time to find the camera, I swiped the pic from Uberti's web site below.

That, my friend , is a reproduction of a S&W #3 Schofield model and you said you got yours in .44WCF (.44-40). Best of luck with it. A buddy of mine has the same one and it is awesome!

Woo Hoo!

Glad to hear it all finally worked out, and worked out alright too.

.44-40 is a pretty powerful Cartridge, leaps and bounds ahead of .44 Russian.

Good going!
