About a year ago I posted a question on this forum regarding the Marlin Model 60 versus the Ruger 10/22 as a first gun for some father son shooting. I got some great comments and advice from the group, so I thought I'd follow up and let everyone know how things went.

I went with the 10/22, not just as a sentimental favorite, but also because I liked the feel over the Marlin. I think I said somewhere in the thread that I was going to keep it stock, iron sights only, etc., but the wind does blow, and I couldn't resist "dressing it up" a little bit (see below). I didn't go tacticool, but I did do some accurizing: Hogue overmold stock, EA Brown 97D 4x12 40mm scope, Talley rings, Volquartsen T2000 trigger group, v-bolt and recoil buffer, and a Tony Kidd bolt. I have been thinking about a heavy barrel, but haven't gone there yet.

Anyhow, this all took a few months, and by that time it was the dead of winter so we didn't get it to the range until April. The first time out, after dialing in the scope, I was shooting dime size groups at 50 yards, quarter at 100 (pretty good for me), and my son was shooting half dollar size at 50, and 3 to 5 inch with flyers at a 100. We shot about 250 rounds and really enjoyed it. We have been a couple of more times since, with similar results. I am thinking of getting another 10/22 for my son (now 12), as he has mentioned it and I have a lot of money in this one now.

Dime size 50 yard groups sure is impressive, especially out of a factory barrel. What ammo was giving you such good results?

10/22 over Marlin

I feel like you made a wise choice on the 10/22, I also send you kudos for getting your son his own rifle. I myself saved up and bought my first 22 rifle when I was 12, times were a lot different back then and the store owner allowed me to conduct the transaction myself(my dad was with me and consented) and the only requirement stipulated by my dad was I had to buy a cleaning kit of my own and ammo to go with it. There was a lot of yard mowing went into that purchase as well as working in hay and tobacco. I did not get a 10/22 myself until I was 18. I think shooting with your son will be cherished memories for your son in his older years. I like what you have done with your 10/22, I have a Green Mountain .920 barrel on mine. It will tighten your groups up a but more with a bull barrel and the break in done as they recommend.

Just CCI mini mag out of a 100 round plastic box, 40 grain I think. I have to say that we were shooting off a rest, and we both had some flyers, but we were pretty consistent with those group numbers. We also shot up a box of bulk Winchester Super X over 2 other trips, about 300 rounds, and I thought that it was lousy ammunition, lots of duds, dirty, and not too accurate-you definitely couldn't hold a group with those rounds, and there were way more flyers than usual. I don't think I'd use the super x again.

I thought about a bull barrel early on, but I already had the standard Hogue stock on. I still might do it, but I would need to learn to do bedding, and get the .920 stock. Not to mention feeling confident about a barrel change without tearing up the receiver.
