Model 70 featherweight accuracy

Well, Today i went out and put a good 40 rounds through my Model 70. Before if anyone remembers i posted about accuracy was changing when the barrel got hot. well today for some reason, i did not have that problem. I shot a BUNCH of handloads and some with cold barrel, some with hot barrel. it maintained a Max of a 2 inch group even with a near burning to the touch barrel. when let cool, i could nearly stack 3 rounds of two different handloads, and two factory loads. Looks like the gun is more accurate than i give credit!

Very nice. I too have a Model 70 featherweight but I haven't been able to use it a very great range yet. I plan to soon, though. I hope I get results like yours.

Good deal dups! Nice when things work out for huh! Especially with guns. I have a pre-64 m70 featherweight. My grandfather gave me it. The first time I shot it, it had an old fixed x4. I shot it at 250yds on a 10" board. When I drove up to the target the spread of 5 shots was about 3.5 MOA. Not bad for the first time, factory cheap loads, and an old x4. It still one of the most accurate rifles I have ever shot.

Why

Why would you expect a rifle designed to carry for long distances and fire once or twice at a game animal to maintain accuracy for extended shots. The most important thing about this type rifle is how doe s it shoot from a cold bore with a follow up shot. If you are looking for extended shooting why not buy a rifle with a barrel designed for the heat?

Good Morning,

I have a new model 70 Featherweight in 243, and it will shoot. I'm also very impressed with the fit and finish of the rifle. The wood is beautiful, and it always draws other shooters at the range to stop by and check it out, and they seem equally impressed.

When I take it to the range to punch paper, I'll also take two other hunting rifles. I'll run no more than 6 rounds through one, set it aside, and then shoot the next one. By the time I'm finished with the third rifle, the first one has cooled off enough to shoot it again. I have to say that it is a PITA, but the only other option is to let the barrel cool down before shooting it again. As was mentioned in a previous post, it's a hunting rifle, not a range queen.

By the way, after a lot of shooting time, and load development, my last 3 shot group at 300 yards off of a bench rest was 1 1/2". Like I said, she will shoot.

I have a 63 vintage featherweight in 30-06 I got new. Back in my younger days it would shoot dime sized groups. Five shots fairly quick will get the barrel hotter than I like, but groups stay small.

After 48 years I am not as steady and do not try for the pinpoint accuracy like I once did, but it still satisfies me.

I'm a big fan of Winchester M-70 Featherweights. I have a post 64 in 257 Rbts for deer and antelope and a new FN featherweight in 270 Win for elk.

I haven't found the impact changes that much, but again I don't do 100 rounds at a setting like my High Power Match Rifles.

But these are my hunting rifles and there is no need. Still I haven't had problems with impact changing for up to 10 rounds or so.
