just wanting members to show some love to their 70s, whichever version they have. I would appreciate ANY stories, recommendations, tips, and ESPECIALLY pics of their 70s, in action or on the bench, it's all good.... let's see em!!!!!:what:
 
I'm a big fan of the model 70 and actually wanted to buy another in Nov 2010. I was looking for a Stealth in .22-250 but they no longer make them. For that reason I ended up with another 700 instead.

I owned a 70 XTR with laminate stock in 7mm RM and have a Stealth in .308. If they had still had the Stealth in .22-250 I'd have had another.

Maybe they will see the light and start making them again.

But to all of you that posted pictures of your Supergrades, those are fine rifles.
 
Geno, is this the " famous " M70 from your early M70 Thread???? Do you have a pic of it scoped??
 
This is the replacement rifle. The first one was defective. This one is awesome. Pic with scope? I'll have to look.

Nice rifle, Geno. I would be afraid to carry that one through the brush into the woods. My Model 70's are stainless, synthetic classics.
 
It has too nice of wood. It just sits in the vault. :) I took my Winchester Stealth .308 Win for deer hunting this past season.

Geno, that's a shame...... but nice to have the choice!!! Are you sold on the M70 as a good hunter?? What is your opinion??
 
I got myself a M70 featherweight two years ago in 243. Love that rifle. Smooth as silk.
 
The current-day manufacture M70s are very accurate. My only point of contention is that the Stealth is not made on-going, and in more calibers than the .308 Win. At present, it is not even being offered. :( I would like to see the Stealth offered in .223 Rem, .22-250 Rem and .260 Rem. I would also like to see a .25-06 Rem and .375 H&H Mag offered in the Super Grade. I doubt my sentiments are sufficient to bring those calibers into regular offering. :)

Regarding the Stealth's accuracy, I have managed some 100 yard, 3-shot groups that are so tight that I dare not even speak it until I am at the range and have a range officer post the target, witness the shots fired, then retrieve and sign the target. This particular Stealth, is hands-down the most accurate rifle I ever have fired. It does not produce clover leafs; it produces a single, very-barely-jagged hole). The load is Lapua .308 Win brass, 48 grains of Varget powder, a 155 grain Lapua Scenar projectile, and a Winchester primer. The scope is a Nightforce 12-42X56 benchrest model.

The range officer who witnessed the last group stated that the only way to assure that the three shots had actually entered the same hole, would be to insert a clean sheet of paper behind the target after shots 1 and 2, thus producing a hole in the second sheet.

Am I sold on the M70? :)

Geno, I can only hope for a rifle as accurate!!! My one contention with the m70, never having shot one, is that I am still unsure whether I like the high gloss sheen on the barrel. As nice as it is, this may be where all the little nicks and scrapes may show their ugliest!!

I couldn't agree with you more. I was really disappointed to find that I couldn't buy a new Stealth in .22-250 back in Nov. I even got a hold of the factory to see if I could get one as a custom, no deal. The .25-06 is my favorite caliber, has been for 34 years.

My .308 Stealth is one of the last to roll out of the old plant, great rifle even though I don't shoot it a lot. So far 90 rounds and it will do 1/2" groups at 100 yards with no modifications.
 
IIRC the Stealth was marketed as a tactical-style rifle for police sharpshooters? If that was the case I'd imagine with FN owning Winchester they won't begin producing any tactical Model 70s anytime soon since they already have the SPR and less expensive PBR/TSR already on the market with essentially the same action.

And yes, the new FN-made 70s are gorgeous guns. That Super Grade is drool-worthy!
 
SpeedAKL, you may have hit the reason there are no more Stealths. Closest thing Winchester has is the Coyote Light, a poor substitute in my opinion.

Three months ago I very stupidly tried to sell the Stealth I was so angry with Winchester for no longer producing them. Luckily I couldn't get a taker. Look on auctions and you can find Stealths for $900 to $1200, they shouldn't cost more then $600 as that's what I remember them selling for.

FN brought back the M70 Stealth this past year at the Shot Show. It is chambered in .308 Win. They have since discontinued it. I was fortunate enough to acquire one of them. They had first been advertised to be offered in .223 Rem and .308 Win. I never did see one in .223 Rem. The site was later revised to indicate .308 Win only.

Damn! The next time my daughter comes over I'm going to learn how to post pictures! Then you men will see my 1952 standard in 270 Winchester. They used what looks like todays deluxe wood back in those days and the blue is soooo deep it looks purple.

I got it in 1980 from the original owner along with all the original papers, box, hang tag and his receipt - all as pristine as the rifle. He gave me the original box of Remingtons he bought for it with 10 empty brass cases and 10 unfired. He swore on his mother's grave that was all he ever shot it.

Like him, for the next 30 years it sat in my safe. Last year I took it out, went to the range with a buddy, and shot up that half a box. The gun is bonified 98% NRA Fine.

It's a flat shooting, MOAing, piece of American art. Sometimes, when the wife is out of town, it sleeps on her side.

I also have a Winchester 52, serial number 1308, that is just as pristine.

Congrats to everybody that has and loves the Model 70.
 
Here's a USRAC Supergrade 270 from when they first started making them again with CRF. That's Abby saying "hey, that isn't a bird gun".

Very nice gun, shoots well, but it's a heavy chunk of steel and wood for an older guy to lug around.

I bought one of the Deluxe Featherweights in 30-06 the first year FN reintroduced them. I am seriously considering a 300 Win Mag Super Grade. That is what a rifle should look like IMO.
