IIRC, the movie was set in 1896-97. wouldn't this make the SG a Winchester 1887?

Here's a link of an interview with Selleck. They mention the 1887. Apparently, Tom spent $30K out of his own pocket to make sure guns and such were accurate to the period.

FYI, rumor has it that Tri-Arms has been trying to produce a replica for years now. Don't hold your breath. Norinco is likely to follow up their success of reproducing the 1897 series with a 87 repro. Cowboy shooters will eat those things up.

That's one reason I like Selleck's movies. Most actors don't even learn to handle a gun correctly, much less ensure they are accurate to the timeframe of the movie.

Saw a huntin' show recently where he took an antelope with his Quigley Sharps. 45-120, 30 some inch barrel, and that tang sight. Quite a different setup than most pronghorn rifles...

Great movie!
I liked it when Walsh topped off his levergun after jacking that first round in. He did that in his previous Western(name escapes me) at one point in the final shootout also.

Tom Selleck is an icon for the modern day shooter. There are few like him in the present...we should do whatever we can to support him. He certainly supports our cause by action and through entertainment.

Great movie , Great actor. I didn't think all the old cowboys wore wrist supports though.

"Leather wrist cuffs may have started out as functional pieces of cowboy gear. As time went on, these wrist protectors became more of a fashion statement, further destancing the cowboy from the lowly farmer or townsperson."

I believe the 87' set up for the movie was an original cleaned up and appropriately stamped and finished to look original. It wasn't suitable for modern ammo. The originals have short chambers and "steel" unsuitable for nitro ammo. Tristar has apparently given up on their long attempt to clone the 87', but Norinco claims to be coming out with a clone 87'. One of the gunsmiths who specializes in CAS guns apparently has several for evaluation. Could be interesting.
I have seen a few originals and got to try an original 10 ga. Don't know if it was an 87' or 01', but the guy was shooting black powder loads. Fun, but slow for me and easy to short stroke and jam.

I like Selleck, but I thought the movie was only so-so.
What really disappointed me were the scenes where he shoots the man, who then promptly flys backwards as if he was hit with a bowling ball! How can I get my shotgun to do that?

When Monte shoots Shorty, it is with a .50-110 Winchester 86'. That cannon probably would blast him off his feet.

LIFE can be a little dull, it isn't always a thrill a minute. I thought they showed little enough of the sheer drudgery of 19th century ranch or small town life as it was. Good show, except for the traditional western movie nonsense of the fair fight. Somebody had just killed my best friend, he would get NO chance if I had a shot at him.

Thanks to Tom Selleck I now what a big bore rifle. Something like a 45-110 or a 50-110. I really liked the movie. I hope it's out on DVD soon.

I liked Monte Walsh. I liked Crossfire Trail better. I liked Quigley down under. I like most of Selleck's westerns.
I was disappointed in the final shootout though when Selleck's shot blew the guy off his feet and slammed him 6 feet back into the wall. If a bullet can transfer that much energy then it would have blown the shooter back with equal force.
But it shure looks cool!
