I took my Mossberg 500 to the range today. I had the 18.5" cylinder bore barrel on it. I will definitely be sticking with my reloaded 3" 000 buckshot load for the 500 and the Shockwave. It's hard to see in the photos but the pellets did penetrate the thick rubber target backer at all ranges.

The next tow photos are at 15 yards. First is 1 shot and the second is 5 shots.

And since the 500 has a stock on it I decided to see how my 3" reloads did at 25 yards. 7 pellets were inside the 8" target with another 1 still on the sticker. and 4 just outside the stick on target. I had 3 pellets that I couldn't tell where they hit since the paper target had holes in it all ready.

That’s good coyote medicine in thick woods. Would likely work for deer too if legal where your at. Punching through the rubber backer seems a good indication that it would penetrate enough to do some organ damage.

Buckshot isn't legal for deer hunting here in Missouri. I mostly loaded the buckshot shells for home defense use. My fiancé and I are both disabled and the 410's fit the bill for around the house. My loads do well out of the 500 and Shockwave.

That's nice shooting and good results. I'd feel completely secure with that combination.

My daughter shoots a lot of .410 through her Enfield- buck, slugs, and pellets. I have a newfound respect for the "little shotgun that could" and no way Id want to be on the receiving end!

Wouldnt mind finding one of the 500 pumps someday, preferably with wood furniture.

My Mossberg has the wood stock. I bought it brand new around 1985 and it has had countless amounts of shells through it. It has been my goto hunting shotgun for everything except waterfowl. The 24" full choke barrel does well for hunting. It took me a few years to finally find the 18.5" cylinder bore barrel for it. Now that I don't hardly hunt, it sits at the ready with my buckshot loads.

I can say that there really wasn't too much difference in the buckshot pattern between the 500 with 18.5" barrel or the Shockwave with 14" barrel at 15 yards or less. I wanted to test both with my buckshot loads and share the results with everyone. 5 Pellets are around 1100 FPS at HD/SD distances is nothing to sneeze at. See my other post on the range results with my Shockwave.

Nice shootin!

If I could only have one of my guns, it would be the stevens o/u 22/410. Though a 22hornet over 20ga might be a bit more suited to survival situations.

I do like my 870 in .410. Its nice and light and packs the perfect punch for home defense, especially for the disabled or smaller framed. Though I use a 20 ga 870 for that purpose.

Thanks guys.

I feel that the 410 is underrated and unappreciated. As you can see from my range results with both the stocked Mossberg 500 and the Mossberg Shockwave, that the 410 is very much a viable option with the proper load and actually practicing with it. Having arthritis and fibromyalgia along with dealing with a bum shoulder right now, the 410 works great. Plus the fact that any person of small stature and/or disabled can handle a light 410 shotgun for home defense and hunting.

In case anyone missed my thread on the Shockwave range results
