After seeing how the standard pressure Ranger T 230 gr worked in my carry pistol (G30), I wanted to try it in my full size 1911 (SA) and I wanted to try the +P 230 gr in my G30. Today I was able to do both.

As before, I fired from about 10' into newspaper that had been soaking all night, covered with two layers of cotton t-shirt and two layers of jeans denim. First, for the standard pressure 230 gr in my full size 1911: I fired eight rounds and recovered seven. The last round penetrated all the way through the wet newspaper and the foot of stacked cardboard behind it, I assume it did not expand. The rest looked pretty good:

With the 230 gr +P in my G30, I fired 10 rounds, and recovered nine. The tenth round also went all the way through, and I assume it did not expand. The rest are here:

The standard pressure load looks fine for carry in a 5" barrel. The +P is still inconsistent in a short barrel. With the +P there was not a very significant increase in perceived recoil, but I could tell it was hitting the slide stop. If you are going to be shooting much of this, it would probably be a good idea to get a heavier spring.

In both tests, penetration was typically 11-12" for expanded bullets.

So far in all my testing, the only two loads that have given perfectly consistent results in my G30 have been the 230 gr Gold Dot and the 185 gr Critical Defense.

The +P version is what I carry. They really work well. Good functional bullet and they are accurate as well! I guess that is another plus. So would that make them +P+? :D:D

Very interesting results again compared to the last test.
Not surprised at the 1911 and standard loads, But the G30 rounds do look alot better than the last test.
I still would drop to the 200gr +p for the G30.
3" barrels i always take the second highest weight in +P if possible.
I carry the Talon series 165gr in my XD SC .40 as i felt the 180 would give me expansion issues.
But i still carry Talon 230 +P in my 1911 as i feel the more penetration the better even tho i know the standard load would reliably expand anyhow.

Honestly this is just splitting hairs at this point, Fun tho.

I settled on Winchester Rangers (RA45T) a few years ago for both my 1911s and haven't looked back.

    Thanks for these reviews!

I'm with you Snowdog. I've probably got too much time on my hands and I've recently been toying with the idea of checking out the Ranger +P loads.
    Thanks lambertiana for posting this.
    I'm sticking to the RA45T
