Just finished up a few more of our "Shivver" concept. These are CPM 3V, with black gunkote finish, polished stainless pins and thong tubes, and "Black Cherry" layered G10 handles.

13-1/2" overall, 3/16" thick, 8-3/4" edge

9" overall, 1/8" thick, 4-3/4" edge

And together with the original Shivver concept blade:

Enjoy!

Thanks, Sam!

Where's the balance on each?

Also, I see some character in the "black cherry" G10, but it's not obvious what other color is there besides black. Blue?

John

The balance on the big one is right at the base of the blade. The smaller one balances a hair back from that. Even though that tang is skeletonized, it's tough to balance such a thin blade forward with hand-filling handles adding weight to the butt.

The Black Cherry G10 is theoretically a maroon layered with black, but it comes out very subtle.

:) Thanks!

I've actually considered doing a ring-pommel version in homage to the traditional pommel of the Celtic Seax, sort of like some small bird & trout knives, but I'd rather not have fingers tied to a 13" long lever. :)

IMO, a Celtic style pommel would be a mixed homage (though not an objectionable one). While examples of the broken-back style have been mostly found (to my knowledge) in the UK, in my mind, the seax is typically a Nordic weapon (Vikings Danes, especially Saxons), not Celtic. But there was plenty of contact between the Nordics and Celts in the British Isle so the mixed homage would very appropriate. But I fully agree about a ring pommel on such a long blade. :uhoh:

Well, Sam, you named 'em right. I started shivering as soon as I saw that first one!

Interesting direction you are going here. It would be cool to see them held in the hand various ways to see what the alignment with the forearm is like.

The long one looks very nice to me. I would prefer a bit more guard protection tho. Remember the longer the bade the handle can be bigger !

Well, Sam did say the balance is about where many people want a fighter's to be. Like you, Gordon, I like a big choppy knife, but this was designed to work a little differently.

I also like a guard, but if you notice, the edge of the blade projects further out than the handle. Between that and the choil, there should be no problems slipping onto the blade. I bet you Sam would make you a very fair deal on the Jade Handled Proto, considering it's been carried a few times, if you want to see if you agree. :)

Nice! I've got a couple wharncliffe blade fighting knives (CKRT Dragon and Spyderco Yojimbo) and have been impressed with their cutting and slashing capability. The big one is really sexy, but I think I'd like the balance of the middle blade better.

Great work all around, though!

That jade handled knife was pronounced a handy little daily user by Dave McCracken. One of the last things he said to me. :(

That sheath material is "Holstrex" which is pretty similar to kydex, though it seems to have a few quirks of its own. The ability to give such an interesting textured surface is very cool.

And they look even better in person! :)

I should have a review or two coming in a couple days, I hope! ;)

As some may have surmised, I am now in possession of the middle (4 3/4") black cherry on black "shivver"; came in today's mail (fast in the hand; fast shipping: it's only appropriate!).

I'm sort of in the middle of a seriously long work day, and have one more tomorrow, but I'll try to get a few Q&D "new arrival" pics of this little blade in hand on Wednesday.

However, the short review is: I love it. It's going into rotation instantly.

It was, as they say, probably more than I should have spent (at least in reckless knee-jerk fashion without first running it by the wife), but definitely less than Sam should be charging. Get while the getting's still good, I say.
