Plus, I like the muzzle blast. I think it's awesome. When I take this gun deer hunting, I like the thought that I can fell and cook my prey at the same time.

If you are not firing with the bayonet extended, you need to do so. Not extending the bayonet will throw off your POI by a couple of inches or so. They were designed to be fired with the bayonet out, as it was Red Army policy for them to do so at all times when not in a vehicle.
 
I've heard the "small" size Limbsaver works very well ... my 2 cents.

The "medium" one fit on both of mine. I'd be surprised if the small one fit, given the tightness of the medium.

To be sure, though, it worked great.

Just kidding, of course. I found that I can shoot my M38 all day as long as I'm not shooting from a bench. It slams my shoulder if I'm shooting from a bench, but standing is very comfortable because the force goes into muscle, not bone.
