Hi folks. I can buy a Romanian M44 for 50 bucks. Seems like a great deal. What is your opinion of these rifles? Good shooters? Durable enough? Also is there any real difference between the Romanian, Polish, Russian, etc...are they all just as good? Thanks for any help.
 
I love Mosin-Nagants, they are great rifles.

They are built like tanks, very tough rifles. They shoot a pretty powerful round, 7.62x54R. They are "combat accurate", meaning anywhere between 2" and 6" groups at 100 yards. How accurate your rifle will be is luck of the draw. There's no real big difference between the different European countries unless you're a collector. However, the Polish ones are usually the nicest.

but a m44 for 50 bucks....then 25 in some wolf ammo.....sounds like a good form of entertainment for a few weekends :D

I would get it. If its somewhat clean and good shape most everything else can be fixed up cheaply and easily. They are sturdy weapons.
 
I'd snatch it up for $50 if you can take a look at it. That's what I usually pay sight unseen. From what I've seen, the Hungarians are the roughest and the Poles are the cleanest. My Hungarian will do just under 2 inches if I'm having a good day, my Russian does just a hair over that, and my Pole and Romainian both shoot around 3 inches. And that's all with cheap surplus ammo.
 
I've got a nice Hungarian and an exceptionally nice Polski model. Great shooters, cheap ammo, excellent truck gun. I may even hunt with my Hunky this year a little. Recoil can be bothersome after 60 rounds or so at the bench. $50 US is probably a good enough deal that you're going to kick yourself if you let it pass by. If the stock is in decent shape, get it. Even if it isn't, plastic stocks are cheap and would help on the recoil aspect.

Go ahead, get it...have fun...that's why there are so many of them around these days. Everyone needs to have at least 2 or 3.

That 50 dollar investment equal out into a crap-load of fun :D . Seriously, M-44s are really fun rifles at really good prices. (Just be sure to fire some surplus rounds at dusk...... ;) )
 
Get it. NOW! Kicks like a mule, uses one of the oldest cartridge calibers still in existence, has a muzzle blast the size of a basketball and boom to match. I picked up a Russian one not too long ago for $95.00 and haven't looked back. Helluva lot of fun for so cheap.

Everytime I go to the range my Russian M44 ends up being the most interesting gun out there. Folks want to know what it is and why the heck it makes such a fireball!:D

I treat all ammo, with the exception of Wolf, as corrosive in my M44. I just don't trust some of the ammo going around advertised as non corrosive or "mildly corrosive".

I saw yet another photo in the newspaper showing an Afgan military parade officer holding none other than.... an M44 with bayonet extended!
 
The M-44 is a sturdy rifle [carbine], with a decently powerful cartridge 7.62x54. Picked up my 1954 vintage Romanian clone for $50 last year. And the bayo folded vs. extended does make a change in horizontal point of impact vs. point of aim on MOST of the M-44's. Your Mileage Will Vary.

Shooting at dusk is well, impressive.
 
Buy it and enjoy it. They are very fun to shoot. The bayonet comes in handy when you're at the range and a mob of rabid watermelons begins to attack the firing line. :D The recoil is impressive to put it mildly. You can buy muzzle brakes for them. However, the noise level is raised inversely proportional to the reduction in recoil. People will definitly stop whatever they're doing and try to figure out what just happened when you shoot an M44 with muzzle brake.

I recently picked up a Polish M44 with laminated stock $60 out the door (which I just refinished...Looks Great) havent fired it yet but maybe this weekend, cant wait.
 
Buy it. I have a Romanian and its great. But really there are all the same just different countries. I can't tell the difference between a Hungarian and a Romanian.

I payed $50 and its perfect for the price. Go for it.
 
Brother-in-law has a Rusky, put a scope on it, and is going deer hunting with it. As echo'd before, big kick, big boom, can be accurate and can take a beating. $50 is good if you can look at it. Most of the C&R folks have them sight-unseen for a price like that.
 
AV1611: foghornl is right. The 7.62x54r is a "decently powered" cartridge--to someone who considers a .50BMG as a nice varmint rig...:evil:

$50 for rifle....
$50 for new sporter stock....
$50 for 1000rds. of ammo...

$150 for a rifle that will keep pace w/ the Wal-Mart specials costing double that--w/o the ammo. What's not to love?...:D
