Without having to sort through all the preceding pages on the off chance it's mentioned, what's a good solid one-inch scope base setup for the Mosin?
Denis

I need a very solid mount, don't mind paying a gunsmith to make little holes here & there. :)
Looking interesting so far.

I think that the whole idea of a Mosin User Thread is an awesome idea, I've had my M44 for a few years now and I'm a believer in Russian Ingenuity now. Gotta love a rifle that you can use as a war pike, club, tent pole, and if it comes down to it firewood. I love my M44 so much!

I'm doing a sporterized Mosin project, with a cutback barrel & an ATI stock. Need a good heavy-duty scope mount to replace the front sight & clear the bolt handle.
Denis

rear sight? and clear the strait bolt handle? your going to have to go with a scout mount like HD posted, or i can recommend from my experience the S&K mount.

@DPris - IMO the ATI stock are OK, I have one. Had I'd known about Boyds Stocks I would have went with one of those instead. If you want something cheap and easy go with the ATI, if you want something a little more elegant go for the Boyds. When I get a few bucks ahead the ATI will be replaced with a Boyds

Nice! I've never seen those stocks before.

How does an aftermarket stock affect the accuracy of the MN? I mean, they aren't that great to begin with. Does it make it worse..... or better? Because if its the latter, screw being authentic. I'll buy a replacement stock!

To avoid hi-jacking this thread on my specific issues, would y'all please follow this in a new thread I'll start?
I'd like to discuss it further.
Denis

Valnar, my 91/30 bedded into its original cut down stock gets around 1.5 with handloads. What are you shooting out of yours?

I haven't shot it.....yet. I just bought it. I still have to clean all the crap off it first, but replacing the stock would eliminate one thing to clean. :D

Then dont be dissing your guns accuracy before you do :p You might give her a complex...

Thats true about cleaning, one of the reasons i waited for one to that some one ELSE cleaned to show up in my LGS.

woke up early friday morning to go shoot before work.

100yrds from the bench. still needs to be sighted in. (50rds surplus) (1 FTF)

I just got my Mosin completely cleaned out. Couple of things.

I am a total noob at this (not any more), having cleaned it up.

For anyone attempting this, here are the tools that I used. YMMV.

Tools:
1 Chapman 9600 kit.
1 1/4 Brass Punch (for removing the interupter).
1 3/32 Steel Punch (for removing the rear sight).
1 Hammer
1 Jawhorse (http://www.rockwelltools.com/US/JawHorse_Workbench-P1352.aspx) to hold it. It has rubber lined jaws.

Took it down, cleaned with Mineral Spirits and then oiled with Balistol. Reassembly was easy except for the rear sight. Still waiting for ammunition to come in so I will shoot it next weekend. There is a local store that had some 7.62 Russian but sold out of it. I should have asked them to hold a box for me :banghead:. So I have no idea if the interrupter is correctly adjusted.

Post cleaning, the trigger feels remarkably good for what I would expect from a Mosin. However, there seem to be some stuff still in the bore. The Balistol patch came out green the first time so I am guessing it dissolved a lot of copper. I may attack it again with bronse brushes and cleaner.

Can't wait for next weekend. I get to finally shoot it. I hope it is accurate.

Question! What kind of wood (hardwood) is used on my 1943 Ishvesk 91/30? It's not laminated. Shellac red. Is it Birch?

The term "Arctic birch" tends to be used interchangeably with "birch" when it comes to Russian/Soviet stocks, although they're not quite the same thing. Most Russian/Soviet Mosin-Nagant and SKS rifles used the same wood - plain old birch, not the finely-figured Arctic birch you might find on a Finnish rifle. Once in a while you can find a nice piece of wood on a refurbished 91/30, but it's often hard to tell under all that shellac.

Should I strip the shellac and just put boiled linseed oil on it or leave as is?

Okay. Question! What's the best way to remove the cosmoline on the stock? It doesn't seem to be soaked in too much, but it's on the surface and nooks and crannys. Could a wipe down with a rag lightly sprayed with WD-40(mineral spirits essentially) take off the surface layer? And then just use boiling soapy water soaked rag to wipe off the rest?
