Mosin Collector Head space Gauge

Just wanted to let Mosin Nagant collectors know that the Yankee Engineer Head space gauge is very nice & simple to use. Mine came today, after ordering on 8-1-04. The website warns that they are a little slow due to increased demand. They make each gauge to order after your check. They have 3 types (Go, No-Go, & Field). The Go measures minimum gap, while the No-Go measures maximum gap on used (shooter) rifles. The field gauge measures absolute maximum gap. Interestingly after receiving my order, the instructions state that Yankee does not recommend shooting rifles even if they pass the field gauge. Total cost $28 for 1 No-Go gauge (which is what I got).

Now to the point. The gauge is extremely easy to use. It looks like a small coin. It has a cut-out for the extractor, so you do not have to remove the extractor. Just drop the coin size gauge into the bolt head, the cut-out groove around the extractor, & close the bolt. On the No-Go gauge the bolt should not close but stop optimally at about 45 degrees, although it still passes as long as the bolt does not totally close (even is beyond 45). I checked my M38 & the bolt stopped at 45. I will check my M44 later. Now it's off to the next gun show in 2 weeks to pick up another Mosin, maybe a 91-59. This gauge would be very very easy to use at a gun show. My only concern is not losing the gauge as it is so small. Highly recommend this one if you plan on collecting Mosins.
