Mosin take down question.

I was wondering if their is anyway to remove the parts that hold the hand guard rings in place. Since this doesn't sound clear to me, I'm talking about the two metal parts that you need to depress in order to get the metal rings off the front of the gun to remove the top barrel cover. Looking closely at my stock i can see that their are small holes opposite the parts in question, I want to put a punch in their to try and tap them out but thought they might be in their permanently and in taking them out might not be able to put them back in again. any help is appreciated.

Nope, not permanent. Just tap them out - I think I used a wire clothes hanger or something similar on mine.

Not recommended. They are fragile, they are old, and they break.

i've removed them from 4 different mosins, only complication was the cosmoline getting on my carpet.

if you tap them out you don't face much risk of breaking them, if you try to pull them out by the spring arm, you don't have much chance of success.
