I was at a local academy yesterday and saw they are selling the Mossberg 100ATR with scope for under $300.

I've not been much of a centerfire rifle shooter in past years, but now that I reload for the .30-30 I've not only enjoyed the shooting but the reloading for it.

So, I'm toying with the idea of saving a month or two for one (does Academy do lay-away?) and picking one up. My purpose would be mostly paper punching and having it available if a hunting expedition would take place. FWIW, I'm thinking short action, either .243 or .308.

Anyone on THR have one of these rifles? How do they shoot? I'm not expecting one-hole-at-100-yards accuracy, but 2-3" at 100 yards would be acceptable for me.

Like I said, just thinking but before I think any more I want some feedback.

The Mossberg is better than a Remington 770, but that's not saying much.

I would strongly recommend a Marlin xs7 or Stevens 200 over either.

I have had a Mossberg ATR 30-06 since 2007 and it was a good buy for a budget beater rifle at $219 from Wally World. But for $279-$299 on sale the Marlin XL7 is a better rifle for the money. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up an ATR for around $200 though.

If you can find the Marlin for close to $300 I would opt for that one over the Mossberg. My problem is I can't find one locally for less than $450.

I would go to the gander mtn's right now, they are having a 10 to 30% off sale right now. One of the stores, (there are 3 around houston) had a couple of marlins for under 300 bucks , and one had a howa legacy, in 270 , with wood stock, for 229!!! that is a super sick deal. And Gander does do layaway, I believe.
Also at Academies, they are having closeout sale on certain rifles, but diff stores have diff stock, so go to several stores to check them out...
I just picked up a Escort shotgun, semi auto, in 20 ga, for 200 bucks!!!!
There is no way in hell's bathroom you will ever see a semi auto anything, new for 200 bucks, ever again in history, unless it is a rimfire.

oh yeah, mossy is not bad for an entry level rifle, that is a synth stock beater; it is just that
the marlin, the t/c, and the stevens are all a bit better, for compareable money.
But don't run from the mossy- just run from the remmy's, and apparently these new Savages...

I had a 30'06 Mossy 100ATR I got new at WalMart for $240 w/ factory mounts. With a $50 Chinese (gasp!) scope I could get "one-hole-at-100-yards accuracy", which I did not expect. Granted this was with a cool barrel, but it will do much better than 2-3" at 100 yards when it's cool, easily do it when it's not. I think this has something to do with the rifling design: HUGE grooves, almost as big as the lands. Looks like a barber pole in black-and-white when you look down it...

Sold it because I don't hunt (and because I wanted a Saiga 308-21) but wish I still had one but in .243
