    The "A" stands for 12Ga I believe.

Yup. The letter designates the receiver size. 'A' is 12ga, 'C' is 20ga, and 'E' is .410

I have a 500A. i thought the A stood for all purpose. O.O all purpose sounds better. because it's got 12ga printed onto the barrel. :)

Marking the barrel doesn't tell you the size of the reciever though ;)

After a certain year, (1992?) Mossberg started calling the 500 12 ga. the 500A.
