I've got a mossberg 500 that serves as my home defense gun. I've got a buddy who has a 590 with the laser sight on the pump lever. Does anyone make an aftermarket one where I can convert mine? I just don't like how his has the 20" barrel. It makes it too long for the home.

I have a Mossberg 500A with the 18.5" barrel as my HD gun. I bought this laser with tactical light with mount from the Tampa gun show a few months back, I believe its made by BSA or Gran light. Comes with pressure switch for both laser & light. Here's a photo.

20" barrel is too long?

since when?

maybe I'm just a big guy, but I can handle my 590 with 20" barrel very easily around my apartment.

i had the 20" barrel on it before but when i switched to the 18" it felt much better. don't ask me why, it's only 2 inches, but it made a difference. as far as shooting it goes, either barrel lenght feels good to me, but for going around doorways the extra split second it gives me could save my life.

thanks for the reply zebraranger, that looks like it might just work.

no, i don't REALLY need a laser sight but it might help. although looking at zebras setup i'd say the flashlight would do me more good than the laser. especially since i keep my 500 loaded with buckshot, it would be kind of hard to miss.

buckshot

My question would be, why buckshot, you do know that buckshot can travel clear through a house and into your neighbors house if it doesn't hit anything substantial in your walls.
Guns and ammo had a article (several years back) were they tested shotguns shot loads on modern construction interior and exterior walls and they determined that anything above 6 shot lead made the shooter a total danger to his own family and his neighborhood as even the 6 shot traveled through 3 to 5 walls before stopping. buckshot if I remembered right traveled through 9+ walls before stopping.

BTW if your not a believer please take out a nice thick phone book of 4 or more inches thick and shoot it with the buckshot, it is an eye opener.

Yep, buckshot will penetrate walls. It will also penetrate badguys. Anything that will penetrate people will penetrate walls. Pistol rounds are even worse than buckshot in this regard.

Birdshot is a poor performer when it comes to SD beyond contact distances.

Know thy target and what lieth beyond it.

penetration

Most of our houses in California have 1/2 inch sheet rock as did the guns and ammo article, but at that still that is 3 rooms of a house which your son, daughter wife Etc. may inhabit, my old fashioned glazer safety rounds will only travel through 2 sheets of 1/2. I was again only cautioning against unintended casualties that might be family members of yours. I use safety frangable rounds as I don't intend to bury one of my kids or neighbors. I don't think some note of caution would hurt.

I wouldn't use my M14 as a home defense weapon either for the same reason, but know of many people that think an SKS/ Ak or AR type weapon is the perfect home defense firearm.

I don't think many bad guys would still attack you after #6

Rantingredneck, once their out of your home in California shooting at them down the street would put me in jail. California is a homecide only state, as in if you kill them the best you can hope for is justifiable homicide, there is no self defense plee if they are trying to flee. Even if I killed him in my home it is still justifiable homicide here.
