Hi Everyone,
I decided I would like to put a magazine extension on one of my Mossberg 500 shotguns in 12 ga. I have not been able to find any so far, I seem to recall a few years seeing them advertised. Any advice on where to look? Or is this something that folks just don't do anymore?

can do it on a mossberg i dont thing due to the way the barrel atatches to the magazine tube.

mossberg 500 you have to replace the mag tube and the barrel. no way to get a extention without getting the barrel to match. unless you get a knoxx sidewinder kit.

As above, there ARE NO magazine extensions for the Mossberg Model 500.

This is due to the way the barrel attaches to the end of the magazine tube.
Since the barrel has a lug that screws into the magazine tube there's just no way to attach an extension.

The only way you can get a bigger magazine, is to buy a longer new factory magazine and a new barrel with the mounting lug farther down the barrel.

Due to the expense, most people just buy a gun with a longer factory magazine.

I just did the opposite. I downsized by going from a Mossber 500 with a 20in barrel, and a 7 shot extended magazine, to a Mossber 500 with an 18.5in barrel and a 5 shot tube. I did it for a couple of reasons. First, the new Mossberg came from the factory with a collapsible stock. Second, the 20in barrel with the regular buttstock is just a little too long to be comfortable in my opinion. The shorter gun is much more handy. I liked the 7 shot capacity, but decided to go with a better fit.

sidewinder kit

Knoxx made (that's made as they are now discontinued)

a great kit where you could have a 10+1 drum mag. It is great for speed of reloading and if you want to go with a shorty-type defense gun. As I said, Knoxx stopped making them but you can find them occassionally on gun forums and on ebay.

Mossberg 500- mag plug

Hey all-- OK, I'll stick with the stock shorty mag. But how do I get the hunting plug out?
Thanks- JWF

turn it upside down and shake it out of the tube after you've taken the barrel off.

And to clarify, some of the newer 500 breacher models use the 590 magazine tube setup so that an extension is possible. But it doesn't sound like that's what you have.

As the other posters have stated, the only way you can add an extension is if you have the 590 magazine tube with seperate magazine cap installed on your gun.
This is a 500 MilsGun with a VangComp 1 shot extension installed.

If you have the standard 500 magazine tube installed such as this:
standard.gif the only way to increase capacity is to remove the magazine tube from the receiver and replace with a 590 tube or the extended 500 magazine tube.
Either way, you will also need to replace the barrel assembly to make everything fit.
If you just want top increase the capacity of the gun from three to six shots, simply remove the barrel and shake until the wood dowel comes out of the screw hole at the top of the magazine tube.HTH

Wow, I didn't bother to look at how very old the original post was!

The Mossberg 590A1 18.5" barrel, 500 Tactical Breacher, 500 MilsGun and the 835 all have the same mag tube setup.

Here is my +2 tube extension on a 590A1 18.5" barrel shotgun. It gives it 7+1 capacity.

to get the plug out
1. remove the barrel and point the magazine downwards
2. grab the little piece of the dowel sticking out with some pliars
3. pull until the whole dowel comes out (there is a lubricated O-ring around the dowel to keep it from just falling out).

I just made the same change and I like my 500 much better now. I got the shorter magazine and spring from Brownell's and the 18.5" barrel from Outdoor Superstore.

You could have bought a used Mossberg 500 with a 18.5" barrel with 5 shot mag for what the mag tube, spring and barrel cost. You would have two shotguns.

Not around here I couldn't. Anyway the whole thing cost just barely over $100 plus shipping which I didn't consider too bad. Also, I already have another shotgun.

MAX100...

Where did you pick up your +2 extension for the Mossberg 590? Thanks for any help.

it's better than anything else made for the 590/835/500 breacher.

Sturdy, screws on easy and smoothe, feeds better than WITHOUT the extension, and priced fair.

get ahold of him and buy it.

looks like Max's front sight has some boogers on it :)

NOTE:

(I had the same thing happen on my gun, and it took a buttload of bronze brushing to get the green stuff off)

I recommend against buying anything from Craig Prince/Max100/Gun Connection. My experience with him is that he insists upon money up front, then makes false promises on delivery. I haven't been able to get any response from him now in 3 months, and gave him the money for an extension 6 months ago.
