Mossberg 590A1 Retrograde - Old Guy House Broom?

Maybe one needs to have been a Soldier or Marine but.... Does it strike anyone else as a bit funny and sadly ill-informed of Mossberg with their Military connections, that they chose to name this *RETROGRADE* rather than either *RETRO GRADE* or *RETRO-GRADE*?

I get the accepted definition of retrograde as to be more or less; moving backwards as in style, in this case.

Retrograde for many of us, and ironically those who carried Mossbergs in uniform, being a direct synonym for retreat.:)

Just a little observation from the peanut gallery.

Todd.

I do with the 590 Retrograde would have come with an 18" barrel like the 500 Retrograde. Would have made it just a bit handier, but I'm OK with the 20" as an all 'rounder. Love the look of that "homemade" one:)

I have been waiting for a LgS to have one before i order one online. Been drooling over the pics of them.

Mine was nearly a blind buy. I got a banner ad about them and clicked on it. Fell in love and clicked the "local dealer" icon. Turned out my LGS of choice had one in stock. bought it the next day;)

I have been tempted to do that. But the last few guns i bought without handling, i ended up hating them. one was a ruger P95, a small LGS said they were small enough to conceal. and that he concealed it when he left the house. When i picked up it. I was regretting it the second i opened the box. The Glock 36 was bought sight unseen. Hated that pistol also. I learned to handle them before i buy.

Oh I totally agree. I misspoke a bit, I think. Blind buy was probably a poor term. I actually had no idea they made them until they popped up on a Mossberg banner ad. I got curious a researched them a bit, and found that my LGS was a dealer. I checked out their website and saw they had one. The next day they handed me the gun off the rack. I shouldered it, felt (and loved) its substantial weight, and felt the slicked up action that only my well worn Ithaca 37 bests. After about 5 minutes, I was filling out the paperwork. I would have never dropped $700 on a shotgun I didn't handle first either:thumbup:

I like it but already have a Maverick Security 7 shot and Wingmasters with spare 20in rifle sighted barrels (12 & 20)--------plus have been eye-ing a lightly used Citori at a LGS ------ so the Mossberg probably isn't in the cards.

Count me in with the "I like what I see" camp.
Don't need one, but if I saw it out in the wild I definitely would be tempted.

Only real knock I can think of is that it looks heavy - but that isn't a deal breaker for me.
This does not strike me as a shotgun you walk all over the woods with...

I like it. I would much prefer it with just a bead front sight though. I really like the looks of riot guns with wood furniture. I have a Remington 870 Police Magnum 6+1 with walnut furniture on order and can’t wait for it to come in.

I’m an 870 guy as I’ve had one since the early 70s and thoroughly familiar with them.

Mine has often been a "woods" gun for me. If the Mexican Greys are ghosting one of our dogs who might be in-heat or when the bear moves to one of the wallows above the cabin, it's the 590 goes along.

Fully loaded it is undeniably *heavy* but the GI sling swivels allow it to be carried upside down and even cross-shouldered and it swings to firing beautifully.

As to the "like what I see" comment. I am continually entertained to see otherwise uninitiated shooters gravitating towards most any riot or trench gun. Often times, they don't know why.... It's just an appeal of the dimensions, proportions and ratios to their own personal aesthetics.

For a greater understanding of this, look into the breakdown of why, on an almost geometric level, we all appreciate the beauty of an actress or model without truly understanding why.

It's really, *the math*. Agents, directors and photographers know this. So too, do some gun company marketeers.

She's a heavy beaut, for sure. Meat where you want it, for sure;) I could lug mine around the woods well enough. My Ithaca 37 is much more comfortable to do so, but the Retrograde is a solid battleaxe. I am hardpressed to think of another gun that I could grab and rely upon for most any need short of .22 duty.

I love this robust shooter, and I really appreciate the weight when firing it.

Have you guys seen the regular Mossberg 500 Retrograde? Does it seem any good?

They had the 500 Retrograde in stock along with the 590a1. Price point it was nicer;) I would not hesitate buying one. Well worth the cost over a 500 if you ste wanting a 500 with 18" barrel and wood furniture. I ultimately decided that I wanted all the over built stuff that a 590 offers over the 500 despite preferring the handy 18" barrel over the 20".

Still as a fighting shotgun, the 590a1 has a slight edge imho. The length and weight dont bother me. Even still, had they not had the 590a1, I would have assuredly walked out with the 500 Retrograde.

It's just you.

...and pretty much everyone else in here that either committed on wanting one, bought one, or basically made a trench gun;)

Once again, this is a heavy cuss of a gun, and I certainly see the merit of polymer furniture. However, short of that and the price (which really isn't that bad if you took a comparable current gun ie not something off the used rack and added on all the doodads), there isn't much fluff that doesn't add some function...well, the bayonet lug is pretty pointless (no pun intended) and I have gotten along fine without a heat shield for decades, but I see them as no worse offenders than what some hang off their ARs. I've been rocking mine with peep sights for over a decade, but I dont fault anyone for liking what they like on their Lego Poodle Shooter. The bones of the AR still solid, bare or dressed to the nines.

There is some nostalgic fluff built in, but I have seen far more useless add ons. I do appreciate the soul of the park finish and wood furniture. At the same time, I would be more than tickled to just have a 590a1 blacked out and wearing poly stocks. No matter how you slice it, the 500 series functions even better than its form. The looks are just subjective.

Actually the new 590a1 retro released at shot 2020 I like better. It’s just a bead sight with the barrel shroud.

I have a Mossberg 500 GS with the black plastic furniture.

After a two day Bill Jeans class and clanging a bunch of steel targets always in a hurry and often I seriously considered getting a set of wood stocks.

As a rifleman that has not used a plain bead much in the past few decades I really like the Ghost Ring Sights.

As a former 11B I am much jelly of the bayonet mount.

A quick, semi off topic question:

does anyone here own and regular switch between a Remington 870 and Mossy 500/590?

This thread really has my salivating for a 590a1. I’d leave my Wingmaster in sporting configuration and have the A1 for utility work.

My only concern is that I grew up on the 870. I’m afraid there might be a muscle memory issue due to the difference in safety position.

Jason_W

I do and did in the Army as well.

I never worried about the safety but the bolt release difference can make things..... er, sporty.

Having distinctly different hand guards seemed to help some.

Todd.
