The 590 is an excellent shotgun, and I actually prefer it to the 870. One other gun to consider would be the Benelli Nova tactical for a little less bread.

I have owned a 590A1 for four years now. I absolutely love it. I have the 20-inch model, and the capacity is great, I keep 7 rounds of 3-inch magnum 00 buck in it for home defense, but it will take 8 of the 2.75" shells. I believe the 18.5" 590A1 holds 6+1. The ghost ring sights on mine are phenomenal for shooting slugs, I can hit targets all the way out to 100 yards with slugs, it's almost like shooting a rifle. The slugs + ghost ring sights combo brings a lot more capability to the table.

I've abused it and run it hard and it has never malfunctioned. The only thing I did to mine was add a GG&G sling mount for the front end. And I am waiting for MagPul to release their Mossberg SGA stock, the OEM stock is too long for me.

The 590A1 is my one and only shotgun and will stay that way forever. I don't need any other.

Rubber Duck,

I am waiting on Magpul as well. Any idea on when they will finally have their stock and forend available for purchase?

No idea. MagPul's policy has always been not to announce release dates. It comes out when it comes out. They showed the mossberg stocks at SHOT show this year so I know they are coming.

I have just had my 590A1 18.5" for a couple of weeks now. I have wanted one for a long time and finally got it. I love it!!

I bought my first 590A1 a decade ago and a couple of years thereafter purchased the 14" version below. We hosted a defensive shotgun class this weekend and it was one of two guns on the line that didn't experience issues. Never a problem from either of mine. I greatly prefer the tang safety of a Mossberg over the button safety of a Remington, but that is a personal preference. If you prefer a pistol grip, the Remington is a better choice.

Love my 590A1. Got the 20in version due to the sell capacity and bayonet lug. I don't use a bayonet but they make the best sling mount.

Here is my 590A1. I know some of you don't like tacticool but I just feel way more comfortable operating a pistol grip. Target acquiring with the pistol grip is a little faster for me.

ATI Talon Stock w/aluminum upgrade.
Mesa Tactical side saddle.
Elzetta light mount.

Shotguns

I have 40 years of experience using and instructing police/tactical shotguns and have used and instructed and maintained ( armorer) hundreds of Rem 870's, Mossberg 500/550/590's and Ithaca 37's during that four decade span. I have supervised the firing of tens of thousands of rounds thru all three platforms and IMO they are all great shotguns. I personally own all 3, and used all three as duty guns. There are pro's and con's to all three when discussing different aspects of them, but all three of them are classic combat/tactical shotguns and have served us well in the military, spec op's community and police use. If you have your heart set on a Mossberg 590, then you will not be disappointed. But all three are good tools in the tool box.
