A guy I work with has a Mossberg Chuckster, model no 640kd in .22 mag. For the life of us we cannot figure out how to remove the bolt or tare it down for cleaning. Anybody have any insight on this?

thanks in advance

a mossberg chuckster...you've got a dandy lil gun there, they are accurate varmiters up to100 yards or so.

anyhow,as far as removing the bolt, its easy once you get it .If memory is correctyou pull the trigger(make sure its empty),pull the bolt back while pulling the trigger and it should slide on out.theres a flat piece that the bolt sets inthat acts like a safty..its where the handle hits when its down,I think you need to depress it also or it wont release.Im not sure but I think its how I took mine out,its been a very long time.

perhaps someone else will chime in

His is the newer model based on the .22LR 340 series. It is nicer than previous Mossbergs and is actually hammer-fired like military rifles rather than being striker fired. The issue is that there is a cap at the rear of the bolt, as well as a dust-cover that slides with the bolt (keeping debris out of the action). I have looked myself and cannot for the life of me figure it out myself. Try removing the stock from the action to see if there are any screws that attach the cap onto the action. I haven't put too much effort into figuring mine out (I've had mine since I was very young, my very first rifle, my first gun was a Mossberg .410 whose bolt removes just like Sirporl describes.

Here's a schematic of its younger cousin.

removing chuckster bolt

To remove the bolt, remove the action and barrel from the stock by loosening the screw on the front of the magazine gaurd. Once the action is removed, remove the two set scres on the side of the action opposite of the bolt. then push the little lever on the bottom of the back cap and remove it. now you should be able to remove the bolt.

Wow, two years later!!!

Yeah, I discovered the whole take-down a few months later. Never even thought to share the news. Thanks.
