I'm thinking about getting a hi-cap shotgun.
The Mossberg 590 nine shots look pretty good.
Please tell me about yours.
How do you like it? Any reliability problems?
So far i've only been able to find one to actually handle. Stock seemed too long for me. Can these synthetic stocks be cut down to fit better?
Speedfeed or regular stock?

Thanks for your replies.

I don't have the 590 but do have the 500 SP with 20" barrel and 8 shot tube. The only real difference is the 590's thumb screw cap for the mag tube allows for cleaning out the tube. Are you going with the ghost ring model or bead sight? You would be just as well served with the 500 in my opinion.

As far as stock length, from the factory is 14.5" length of pull. Over this past weekend I took mine off and took it to the table saw. I cut 1" off. Man what a difference.:D

Mine runs like a top. Other than a little lube in the action, and pulling a boresnake thorugh it, it hasnt been cleaned in forever. Its kind of a pain to take apart due to the side-saddle.

Mossberg doesnt offer screw-in chokes for this model (or any other "short" gun), so you're limited in what you can shoot and actually get good patterns out of. Mine likes Federal LE133 (8 pellet) and LE132 (9 pellet) the best, they normally gave me an eight to ten inch spread at 25 yards. I ran out of both and I'm using commercial Federal H132 00 now, which like the LE132, is reduced recoil 9 pellet 00B which is a few FPS lower than the LE stuff. I honestly think its just LE stuff that chrono'd too slow so it gets boxed for commercial use. While I havent patterened it at 25 yards, it seems to pattern as well as the LE stuff. Cheap 00B (Wolf and S&B) doesn't pattern so well, but still plenty tight enough for home defense. Anything smaller than 4 buck has a huge spread. Birdshot is just for making noise.

I cut about 1.5" to 2" out of my stock and used a slip-on limbsaver for a youth model. I made the first cut with a jigsaw, it didnt turn out so well. Maybe I was pushing the saw too hard, but it didnt cut straight. I flattened it out with a beltsander at work, then kept sanding till the limbsaver slipped on. LOP is about 12.5" and fits me perfect. I also stippled the stock with a woodburning pen. If you dont want to cut yours Mossberg's Bantam stock has a 13" LOP, and the houge has a 12".

The bayonet, IMO, lug is useless. I ground it off to make room for the surefire. Mine is the 623FA that doesnt have the master kill switch (tape switch and constant on only). If you get one, go ahead and get the 623FGA (with the master kill switch) so you dont regret it (like I do).

I had an extended plastic safety on it, but unlike the mossberg plastic safety, it gave me problems recently. It just wouldnt work, I had to take it off to disengage it, put it back on off-safe, and just lived with no safety for a little while. Its got a Vang on it now.

I hope your endurance is decent, loaded, this thing is heavy. I think my AR has me spoiled. I think I need to carry my tommygun around a little, bulk up some...

I've had mine for about 8 years and have been using it for the last five as a cop.

I've never had a problem with it. I'll post a nice tacti-cool picture of it later.

I went with my friend to get one. Had some feeding issues at first that I was surprised by as all my (and my family's) experience with Mossberg has been positive. Luckily my brother is a Navy armorer on a PC boat and knew something to try. Looks like it pretty much fixed it but only time will tell. Fit and finish have been excellent (marine coat).

My 590a1 has been great - still breaking it in, but no problems!
I got mine from Vang w/surefire forearm, mag extension, std. synthetic stock shortened to ~13" LOP.
Got to agree with Zach - this can be a heavy gun - got to get out more & practice !

I have run thousands of rounds through mine without a single jam that was not my fault. I tend to short stroke the pump, so when I do my part it runs like a champ. I fire all kinds or shot from 1.25 oz mag slugs, to cheep wally world bird shot. It seems to not care too much what I feed it, though I have never really shot for pattern on paper. She is a bird, clay, busting machine.

I can't imagine a better pump 12ga - especially at the price!

This is my second and I've shot every type of load possible in it. I barely clean it except to bore-snake the barrel and wipe down the insides of the chamber and I've never had a problem - although maybe pump-action shot-guns don't really have problems (I wouldn't know). I find the rubber butt-stock pad really helps with recoil and the stock has a great shape to it - it's almost like having a pistol a grip.

One thing is that while I like the 9 round high capacity, I think I might be better served with an 18.5" gun and a few less shells. It's rather front-heavy when fully loaded. The 18.5"/6 round Mossberg Mariner would be a nice alternative that is a little shorter.

Yes, the stock is long but it fits me nicely. I'm not sure how useful the speedfeed version would be - I guess it would bring the balance a little more to the rear but you've already got 9 rounds.

I've had mine for about a year, and I love mine.

The only problem I've ever had is when the magazine follower would get stuck in the receiver.

It just needed to be broken in, though, and hasn't done it since.

Oh yeah; I have knoxx Compstock on it, which helps with the recoil, which isn't too bad in the first place due to the weight of the gun.

The Hogue fore-grip that came with it really flows with the lines of the gun.

I never messed with the LOP; it was right on for me.

Thank you for the replies.

I've decided to go with the M590A1.
The Mossberg website has it listed as model number 51663.
I'll have to special order it from the local dealer.
NO ONE within a 100+ mile radius has one!

Do any of your M590's have a model number stamped anywhere on it?
The one Model500 I got to examine didn't. Just want to be sure I get the correct gun when it comes in.

Now I will have to purchase a bayo for it. Oh darn. :D

If I remember correctly mine has the 590A! stamped on the receiver

Great gun, now you'll have to get a bayonet!

FYI I did not like the pistol grip stocks or the combo, was very hard to actuate the slide release. I use the speedfeed stocks and a sidesaddle. Kinda weighty when fully loaded will all the ammo, 8+1 and 10 more on reserve that's 19 rounds of 12 gauge all on the gun ready to go wow!

590A1 is stamped on the left side of the receiver (under the Sidesaddle).

Knoxx Comstock will allow you to dramatically reduce the length of pull. I've had mine for about 2-1/2 years, have run several hundred rounds through it without a hiccup.

It IS a heavy beast however - especially with the Surefire forend light.

Careful though, as there are those who lurk here who will label you "tacti-cool" for having put any gothic jewelry on the gun.

Here are pictures of a Mossberg 590A1 with a 18.5" barrel and speedfeed stock with one of my custom fitted magazine tube extensions. It gives this shotgun +2 rounds, 7+1 total. I believe that the 18.5" 590A1 feels and handles much better than the 20" barrel model and you only lose one round on the shorter barrel 590A1. This shows a +2 tube for the 590A1 with 18.5" is possible

590A1 with ghost ring sights, a speedfeed stock, 18.5" barrel and a +2 magazine tube extension, 7+1 total capacity.

You need to edit your post to insert http:// at the beginning of each photo address so the photos will show.

Here be my Mossy 590 used for home defense only:

I have short arms so...had to shorten the LOP by putting on a child's stock...fleshed it out with a little padding and now she's perfect:

Its on the bottom of the receiver, between the loading port and mag tube. On mine anyway. Never heald an A1.

Also, if that model 500 had a side-saddle, it blocks the serial number.

I considered the Speedfeed stock, but decided against it after reading some negative comments about them online, mainly having to do with either the shells being to difficult or too easy to extract (I read many complaints about shells popping out of the stock under recoil).

So far, mine has had no problems. Very accurate too, it loves the Federal 00 2 3/4" with FlightControl, though I noticed you give up a shell in the tube as they are a little on the long side for 2 3/4" shells. That's okay, as I'd rather have a tight pattern (about 4.5" at 15 yds) anyway.

Any advice on where to get a bayo for it?
The bayonet is an M7, same as for an M16. So, pretty much anywhere bayonets are sold. :)

I bought my 590 used. it had a small problem - the safety would engage when the pump was pumped. I called Mossberg, and before I hardly said what the problem was, the rep said to send it in. I had it back in 2 weeks, including surface shipping both ways, coast to coast. So they had it like, for 1 day. Good service.

I have a 20" 590 Mariner. I needed a shorter stock so I put on a Hogue 12" LOP stock and I went with their fore-end too since it came with it. It's a much better fit for me now. I also went with a Vang Comp oversized metal safety. Then I ordered a Mossberg heat shield with matching Mariner coating. It works great.

As a previous poster mentioned, it is heavy when fully loaded. That 18.5" 590A1 with 7+1 capacity sounds intriguing.

I decided against the speedfeed after I shot a mossberg that had one. On that note, I would not reccomend a speedfeed to anyone that is wrong handed.
