Mossberg Trench Gun

Trench guns are supposed to have bayonets aren't they?

Well the longer 20" barrel 590A1 comes with a bayonet mount, but it's too long and too nose-heavy for me. This is primarily a defensive gun so want to keep front-mounted weight to a minimum. Just gotta figure out a light mount and I'm done with this one.

Do you think you could mount a short section of rail to the side of the heat shield with a coupla steel Chicago screws?

Do you mean a longer screw that replaces the heat shield forward screw, that also holds a rail section? Hmm maybe....

You should know bayonets are very effective for home defense. Nothing says "get out" Like a loud yell "CHARGE!!" and you running out of the dark hallway at the intruder. LMAO :D

Also a great steak knife. You know.....in case you get attacked by some steaks or something.

How hard would it be to put a ghost ring sight on one of those? I have a 590 blued that has the bayo lug and heatshield. But mine just has a brass bead front sight. I friend has a 500 with some sort of ghost ring with red fibre optic front and two green fibre optics on either side of the ghost ring. That was an awesome setup. I liked the sights so much I was willing to trade one for one (and he would have to get the higher capacity) but it turned out he was hanging on to the thing while his brother worked through some bad times and couldn't part with it. His brother has since worked himself out and has legally taken the thing back. For a while there it looked like he might not get it back but he did...I am happy for him...but no trade for me.

That sounds like an aftermarket sight that probably mounted on a rib. The 590 doesn't have a rib. There is a Mossberg ghost ring sight that mounts on the rear on the holes that are drilled and tapped on recent Mossbergs. The front sight has to be soldered on, which requires refinishing the barrel.

I did this myself. Bought new barrel from Mossberg for the 590a1 and the ghost ring. In all honesty it likely would have cost less to sell the 590 and then bought a 590a1

I've done a few more mods and I'm pretty happy with how the shotgun is now. This suggestion was a great one and made it into the final configuration:

I screwed a short section of Picatinny rail through the holes of the heat shield and used it to mount a Streamlight. The light controls sit just forward of where my left hand rests on the slide so I can reach up and toggle it with my thumb without breaking my grip. There's no interference with slide movement. I had some misgivings about mounting stuff to the rail at first, but the setup is very solid and doesn't shift around.

The shortest screws I could find were a bit too long, so I trimmed a leather washer to go under the rail section. This gives just enough clearance so that the screws don't scratch the barrel.

I trimmed about 1.5 inches off the end of the stock and added a Limbsaver buttpad which cuts about 50% of the recoil - now it's downright pleasant to shoot. Finished it off with a simple web sling from Tech-Sights. Only thing left to do is start stacking up those empty shells at the range.

Thanks for looking

I like all of the mods you've done, especially the addition of the Streamlight and how you mounted it to the handguard. I have a Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad on my Maverick 88 and it works very quite nicely at absorbing some of the recoil force.

Here is some pics of my version of the classic trench gun I'd like replace the birch butt-stock with a laminated version, and maybe have it threaded for choke tubes.

Can anyone recommend a good light and mount setup? I am kind of suspicious of mounts that clamp in front of the slide. I am worried the mount might shift and prevent a full stroke of the pump.

Hey Noirfan, does that shield look like it could be relieved to allow the rear rifle sight to protrude through/ How would the line of holes be arranged, straight down th top dead center of the barrel or would they be on either side of the sight?

Nice! Can I join the "old school" fest?

I'm a fan of blued shotguns with wood furniture, myself.

My Parkerized & Polished Blued 870 Police models:

My Mossbergs (I stripped my 590 of the heat shield and ditched the black polymer furniture. Corn cob forearms were getting scarce even back in 2010.)

I'm using the Surefire 6P bodies with CDMGear clamps on my Mossbergs now, like this one on the Winchester:

I've only used the Streamlight TLR3 so I can't compare it to any others. I like it just fine, nice and bright at indoor distances, with a very secure rail mounting. I've heard others say that Surefire lights are better but I can't speak to that.

The heat shield is from Aimpro Tactical and the holes fall on either side of center, not straight down the middle. They are about 7mm apart. If you cut a slot in the heat shield I would be concerned with weakening the mounting bracket where it touches the receiver. If you could do it only where the sight pokes through, and not all the way from the rear end, it might work.

Thanks for the pics, did you use any kind of stain on those stocks? I'm thinking of darkening the wood on mine. I've always been a fan of your gun images, especially the blued S&W revolvers.

It looks great just as it sits. Does the heat shield around the barrel come with the gun when you bought it?

Yes. I have tried a couple of different wood stocks on my Mossbergs. I didn't like the glossy original poly finish on them, so I stripped the finish and applied some walnut stain and an open tung oil finish. Unfortunately, the wood stocks for Mossbergs are made with cheap wood that doesn't have much beauty, but it sure looks a lot better than black plastic. :)

And more importantly, shotguns just feel so much better in the hands with wood furniture. I not a fan of plastic stocks on a shotgun. Only two of mine still have the plastic:

And the Versamax (amazing shotgun) may hopefully wear wood furniture someday- if I can find any. Remington really needs to produce a version of this shotgun with walnut furniture.

The TLR makes for a great light on pistols and long guns.

And here's an aftermarket flashlight body the size of a Surefire Executive E1 light.

I prefer clones of Surefire lights, as you can get such better LED emitters than Surefire offers, for a small fraction of the price.

looks great, pachmeyer magnum decellerator pad should be added.

No. Correct ammo should be selected instead. Today I have seen five packs of Federal Premium Foster Tactical slugs at $3.50 per five pack. That is exactly type of ammo that is needed. At another table there were boxes of Remington 1oz Foster slugs Vo 1200fps at $4 per 5. Those are also very good.

Agree, like it a lot! That is the way my shotguns are set up (less heat shield). I have a couple of Remington 870P's with wood stocks and no attached do-dads.

My one plastic stock shotgun is a Remington 870 Express tactical with ghost ring sights and I ditched the stupid breacher choke with a flush fit IC choke.

Simple is the way to go, however skeet choke is probably best if shooting both BK and Foster style slugs. The only addition to mine is Surefire X300 clamped to extension tube.

Modern internals? That design has been around since 1931. :neener:

Seriously looks nice! Looks like it should be riding in the lock rack of a squad car.
