"Most Accurate .308 Bullet?"

It's not that clear-cut but starting with the Hornadys and Sierras is a good move.

Best .308 Target Bullet??

For me it is the Sierra 168 HPBT (Match King). I load this over 42.0 to 44.0gr. of IMR-4064==Works for me..Bill..;)

With a dozen .308's and lousy groups could it possibly be some "operator error"?

I get very good groups with heavy rifles; 223 33 gr, 6mmBR 65 gr and 257RAI 75gr.

I think the "operator error" has something to do with recoil management.

From my limited experience, I have had VERY good luck with 168g SMK over Rel 15... and the Sierra Gamekings also shoot pretty darn well for a "hunting" bullet.

My 2 Cents

The 168 Serria Matchking has been around for many years and it has a proven track record. It is definitely a good bullet.

However a few years ago I switched to a 168gr Hornady A-Max. Sweeeeeet !!!

I have several .308's one with a three groove 1-12 Lilja Barrel and it prints a hair over 1/4MOA, it is not a rifle, it is a long range high speed precision drill !!

My factory barreled m-700 easily hold 1/2MOA, I have loaded very little for it, as my Lilja Barreled gun has a tight neck chamber, and I can't swap ammo.

My next move is to go into some serious load development for the factory gun, as I just threw some rounds together for a quick trip to the range and still have a few, just lucked onto something that printed well.

FYI my powder of choice is Varget, the primers are WW lg rifle, the brass Laupua.

Both Barrels are 1-12 twist.

Same bullet works pretty darn well in my Garands too

every gun is different. I've tried the sierras from 150 up to 175 and the 155s are the most accurate out of my stock savage barrel. I use RE-15 powder and get about 2650 fps from a 20" barrel. 1" at 200 yds

My rem 308 LOVES the 168g nosler cc on top of 45.1g of varget. 2714fps (10 shot average 13fps variation). Seated to 2.81"oal.

Very good price by the thousand directly from nosler. you really should try a couple different bullets to find what your gun likes best.

Each gun is different and your milage may vary.

Wow. Not one person said the Lapua 155 gr. Scenar. Very high B.C. around .500. Great bullet and they are cheaper than Bergers!

Some of my recent "super accurate" bullets have been Nosler Custom Competition's, 175 Gr. with 43.5 gr of Varget. 5 shot groups of 1/4" @ 100 yards are common.

For a hunting bullet, from the same rifle (remington 700 SS 5-R Milspec) a Nosler 165 gr Ballistic Tip yields almost the same group size with 44 grains of Varget.

For some reason this rifle likes speeds between 2500 fps and 2600 fps.

I would stick to the Noslers B tips or A-Max but give some others a try and se if you can improve. My experience with .308 has done best with the Noslers for accurate shots at longer distances. Will be gald to hear what you find with the others in "your gun". they all seem to shoot one bullet better than another even in the same model firearms.

168gr SMK is the only bullet i have experience with but it was damn accurate for me.
