Most important thing you've learned on THR

The most important thing would probably be there are still a lot of good people out there, (easy to forget sometimes when you don't deal with many)
I have been lucky to get lots of good info here as well as some great PIFs.
Have made what I would consider friends here even though I have never seen them in person. and may never to be able to. (and some that are no longer with us. RIP @jell-dog).

've learned that THR is not a forum that respects the 1st Amendment. I don't know that I've ever been a member of a forum with mods so trigger happy to close threads.

It goes against the spirit of the internet and open discussion
Some fail to understand that this is a private forum. You don’t have an unfettered right to spew endless opinions. You are a guest. You can also be told to leave at their discretion.

Unlike many other forums, the unpaid moderators keep this one civil.

Yet how many here argue that Youtube's repression/shadow banning/demonetization of gun channels is a violation of the 1st amendment, rather than their exercising control over their "private forum?"

Can't have it both ways.

I've also learned when browsing threads, you may find answers for questions you didn't know you had. There are lots of members with valuable insight but there are some that (unintentionally I'm sure, as sometimes it's not even directed at me) make me feel incredibly ignorant. Not in a bad way, because sometimes ya gotta know what ya don't know first.

Don't start a responding post with: "Well, ...." - because it almost always makes you sound like a snotty, petulant turd.

Uses emo-whatever-symbols because feathers get ruffled easily in electro-blind communications.

Don't be afraid to "ignore" as well as follow. Often smooths otherwise predictable bumps in the road.

Re-read and re-read again to make sure you weren't ambushed by spell-check.

Know when to rest on a statement and leave the dickering to the perpetually bored.

Check the backgrounds of attached photos for.... just check the backgrounds.

Ignore, for the most part:
Caliber wars
Tactics
Projectile debates regarding; weight, shape or composition.

I understand this is a private forum and it can make it's own rules. I just disagree that shutting down threads is justified, especially at the level it happens here. On other forums I'm on moderators deal with things getting out of hand by speaking those causing the problem, or even punishing them it it comes to it. But they leave the discussion open to those still participating civilly. Here, they punish everyone because of the actions of a few. Which is eerily similar to our complaints about what gun control does, isn't it?

I enjoy this forum because it is not like other forums. I have seen threads on other forums devolve into character assassination, threats and disrespect. No thanks.

I am in search of solid information, helpful instruction and sharing of relevant experience when requested. I hope I can do my part in the knowledge base, but hope I am not pushing my agenda or outlook on anyone. This board offers a bit of calm in a stormy sea. The high signal to noise ratio is greatly appreciated.

That’s easy. Go to the other forums

This is called The High Road for a very specific reason. You are quite free to disagree and discuss. Your opinions do not have to align with any preconceived notions.

What will automatically get your thread shut down is politics, religion, non-firearm related topics, and personal insults. I see no reason why that is unlivable

If it’s something you cannot tolerate, start your own forum. Then you can run it as you see fit. This is one of the most visited firearms sites on the internet because it is civil.

Don't mention anything remotely considered to be political, even if it falls into the legal or Activism section

Not exactly true. There are threads during the political season that fare well.

Unfortunately, political based threads typically jump the rails fairly quickly and get locked. Seldom can people discuss today’s politics in a civil manner

And, this is a gun forum. Not a political one. If you want to bash/get bashed about your political views, go to Facebook.

Not talking about bashing but about the role the current political climate is changing our gun rights. One can easily get a time out for a mis-step, let alone the thread locked.

Another thing:

When I'm watching a thread; if I go to the top and click on *unwatch thread* and then click back on *watch thread* but without the e-mail notifications... My mailbox doesn't get filled with updates to threads but they still show up as new alerts within THR.

The real pearls of wisdom would get my account banned. Otherwise, this is probably the most reliable source of information and discussion hub I have ever encountered for firearms. Every single person here was a new gun owner at some point. Most of those who post regularly have a genuine interest in helping others expand knowledge.

Another here that learned to limit their forums.
I tend to have one for each of any particular subject, and THR is mine for guns. The one thing they all have in common is moderators that show respect and understand, enforce, and themselves follow the intended rules.

I've also learned that I can quickly respect anyone as a person that shows they are worthy of it, respect their knowledge if it's worth it even if not their personality--and vice versa--but any that are worth admiration tend to have been around long enough--and wise long enough--that they've developed both, and as such we've already lost many since I've been here.

-Something that I never use. [ignore]
All opinions interest me - and tell me a great deal about the holders of those opinions... .

Any adult should be able to handle differing opinions, offensive comments and even insults. Of course, any adult should also strive to be inoffensive and respectful as well.

I consider it “tuning out the noise” ... kind of the same reasoning for not watching The View or Jerry Springer. If you recognize baloney, you don’t have to hear it every day to know it’s baloney. I rather spend my time on more worthwhile pursuits

I have reached a stage in my life where I honestly don’t want to learn anything about some people. Not due to animosity, just absolute lack of interest. I hope they all live wonderful lives, but I just really don’t want to know.

And no, you aren’t on my list
