Okay everyone I need your help! You gentleman will help my decision along as what to keep and what goes, so fire away!...I have a 629-2 Mountain Revolver and a 629-5TrailBoss...I need to keep one for the trail, backpacking and hunting backup (trips go into bear country). I have read past forums about both and I am more confused than ever about both. Some say the Mountain Revolver barrel is to light and would not be good reacquiring the target, other say the Trail boss is better in other ways. I am not too concerned about weight as there is not a big difference between the 2, I just want the best choice that can save me if the situation should arise. Please feel free to comment. If you had to keep one to use on a regular basis what would she be? Have fun with this topic...

I had a classic 629 in 4 inch,..standard barrel. It worked very well for me,..and the weight difference was insignificant to me. I looked at one of the earlier Mountain revolvers,..and just didn't see the need for the difference. Mine was not ported,..and had the standard Goncalco Target grips. With .44 Spec it was a sweet heart to shoot,..but even with 240 grain .44 magnums,..it wsn't all that bad.
I am not sure I'd care for the Trail Boss due to its ported barrel. I'd think it would be an even worse ear splitter,..although I guess it could make the handling better for second/subsequent shots. The loss of one inch on the barrel for a field gun,..to me at leat,..would be of no consequence.
If I were to choose,...I'd probably go with the Mountain version.........

I agree about the weight not being and issue, however from what I read about the Mountain Revolvers is that they made a lighter barrel on the 629-2 version so the classic has a heavier barrel. Just wondering if the lighter barrel would be an issue on subsequent shots...

Yes, the lighter barrel of the MG (and lack of porting) will be slower on subsequent shots.
However, the difference between the two in practical application is probably of no consequence. Worst case scenario is a bear attack; .1-.2 seconds between shots will probably make no difference.
I would vote for the MG; lighter weight and no porting. The porting, with magnum loads is brutal without hearing protection.

Time your splits with each gun using your load of choice. Use the one you control best... or compare the differences, then decide based on weight or draw speed, knowing you will more than likely be compromising somewhere in the equation.
In case of an angry bear, you're gonna be reacting behind the power curve to begin with, so maybe add in, which one can I draw and hit fastest with, and how much elapsed time does that take? P.O.'d bears can move pretty fast and hone in on their threat accurately. Can you?

My Mountain revolver 629-2 is the best S&W .44 mag I have or have seen in all ways, I carry it for heavy duty defense. Trail bosses don't turn me on, the barrel starts losing a lot that short, they are MIM unlike the Mountain revolver and the lettering is cheap looking compared to the 629-2. The finish is rougher on the 629-5 generally and all though I wouldn't throw one away it is Not in the same league as my beloved Mountain Revolver which was only produced for a year!

I have a 2nd generation Mountain gun in 44 Mag and I would not trade it for anything.

+1 for the 4" Mountain Gun.
A 3" ported .44 Mag sure doesn't tickle my fuzzy.
If I wanted to be blind & deaf while getting et by a bar, there is no better way to do it.
You may have those ports right in your face when a bear jumps on top of you and starts knawing on your headbone!

629-2, hands down. No mim parts and firing pin still on the hammer. The cost cutting measures were not implemented yet.
