Moving a gun safe Interstate

I did a three-year expat assignment and had to leave all firearms in custody of a US-based moving and storage company. All appeared on the manifest by model and serial number, and were insured.

When we returned from the assignment, the storage company was unable to produce the handguns. I reported the theft to law enforcement and filed a claim with the storage company's insurer. They settled with me for an appropriate amount, and law enforcement later recovered two of the stolen handguns and returned them to me. The rest, if recovered, have not been returned to me.

I would unpack your safe and ship it with the door unlocked. If the shipper has adequate insurance coverage and will accept your firearms, I would put your firearms into the custody of the shipper and list them on the inventory documents.

The only exception would be irreplaceable items. Those I would take in the car with me.

Moving company insurance is by the pound. Full replacement is an added cost (and worth it), not just for guns, but expensive furniture, china, whatever.
