My only concern is how much the movers will charge us for the safe, and will they get the right equipment to move it on both ends.
Easy to find out. They charge by the pound. As far as the right equipment, if it can't be moved with a hand truck (regular or appliance), I doubt they will have the right equipment with them. So I would be prepared unless you want your safe man handled.

They usually have someone come out to do an estimate - show then what is going, get extra insurance for anything worth more than about .60/pound - if they wrap/box it and it gets broken, they pay you for it....if YOU do it, no such luck

I would be afraid to list the items. Moving company employees know what is insured and if something happens, it's covered. It's an invitation. I have some firearms that would be VERY difficult to replace. Plus there is no way I could do it as "one box". I am glad that worked for you.

"I am going to be moving from the peoples Republic of New Jersey to New Mexico..."

TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!
I can't wait to get back to America!

Like oneounceload, I packed all of my firearms myself in sealed boxes and purchased additional insurance. I accepted responsibility for how I packed them and the moving company knew this...they took the manifest without question There is no way I could have moved all of my firearms myself.

After meeting with the moving company, I was satisfied with my decision....besides, I doubt very seriously if someone could have unloaded the other stuff easily to get to my sealed boxes (total of 9 large boxes) since I supervised where every "special" box went on the truck. I also built a good relationship with the driver and we stayed in touch via cell phone the entire time....he knew a good tip was heading his way if all went as planned. The only real glitch was the scratch on the safe and if the proper safe-moving equipment had been prearranged in Pa, would have never happened. It wasn't the drivers fault but the sister company of the movers that dropped the ball.

To each their own but I doubt the average person is willing/able/comfortable to try to move 94 firearms half way across the country. I guess a rental truck could have been one solution but what happens in the event of a breakdown or worse, an accident and the truck is incapacitated....then you're forced to unload/re-load another. Irreplaceable firearms and our carry guns did stay with us though...nerve-racking to say the least while traveling through the communist state.

The safe and my tools were an additional $150 to move due to the extra weight.
