I'm looking for a good little 3 gun competition gun and a battle rifle. I know one rifle isn't the magic solution.... But I am just getting going into 3 gun and both have long for grips and really long sight radius for iron only competitions.... Any thoughts as to which one will serve my dual purpose better? I have narrowed it down to these 2 rifles. Thanks.

PredatAR can be had in 18" barrel. M&P is 14.7" plus a permanently attached flash hider. The longer barrel with the ability to swap compensators wins. For me, this would be the deciding factor.

These rest small things, and barely matter, but here they are.

PredatAR is a Wylde chamber, not NATO, so a bit of accuracy edge.

MSRP is lower on PredatAR, but the M&P will be discounted more.

Downside to both is full rails on the handguards, and rails are just about useless in 3-gun, and you will want to put some covers on them to keep from tearing up your hands. Why pay extra for a feature then cover it up?

You might get more answers in the Competition section of the forum.

LaRue all the way. They make outstanding rifles.

I would grab the LaRue, but both Smith and LaRue make good rifles.

Screw the Larue now... 18 weeks out... They make good stuff, but I need a rifle before September.

I'm going to throw this one out there for you that you may not have heard of

    Barnes Precision Machine

They make a Tactical Match Carbine, but even their standard Patrolman's carbine is hard to beat. BPM is the standard in my mind and experience for a custom grade rifle at just over a mass produced price.

Any of my other choices would not likely meet your price point but well worth the money (BoHoss Engineering).

Why a mid length gas system on an 18" barrel?

Less felt recoil with mid length. Easier to get sight picture on rapid fire.

Compared to what? Everything I've ever heard says go rifle length.

Buy a complete upper and a stripped lower?

I don't think it will save you $, just time....

You might have to tune with shorter barrel lengths and rifle gas

Yep. 18" = rifle length gas. Less dwell time than with longer barrel or shorter gas, but a good sweet spot.

When I answered, I was referring that a mid length is less than a carbine. For sure the impulse is lighter on the rifle.

Those BPM guns someone linked to are all 18" guns, that's why I don't understand not using a rifle gas system.
