MP5 is (properly) a submachine gun. IOW, select-fire, pistol-caliber bullet hose. Very handy at the shorter ranges, but get less effective rapidly past 50-100 yards. Mechanically an excellent weapon, controllable, and I really appreciated the collapsible stock when I needed it. With the stock collapsed, you can stuff the gun and a bunch of loaded mags into a backpack, easily. Very handy. (Not in this country, guys). I don't even know ( I never bothered to look) if there are MP5's available on the US market manufactured before 1986, which would be the pre-req for us joe-citizens to own one, after going throught the ATF hoops. All of this is independent of the AWB junk. Different law.
(After a bit of thought, there must be legally transferrable MP-5's out there, as I think some members own them).
I couldn't afford the gun or the ammo I would expend, though.

One thing I find most common about the people who support gun control is they don't have a clue what's already illegal. I'll point out one or two common laws and ask them to look up which of the other regulations apply for me. They don't do it of course, and if they could it would take years to review all of the federal gun laws, much less state and local.

Woowee are those things going up in price! It's amazing what supply and demand can do. Maybe some day I'll win the Lotto, move to a normal state, and get me one of them. And a truckload of ammo to feed it.

Trapshooter explained it - an SMG is an automatic weapon that fires pistol-caliber rounds.
