Multiple purpose guns

But my real question is what is the platform you reach for the most?

If I’m going around people i wear an m&p 5” for which I have 9mm, .40, and 357sig barrels.
If I’m outside I wear a 357 mag (either a 686 or my 327pc) for animals.

I often carry a long gun but they’re not “general purpose” they are selected given the specific situation (556,30-06, 30/30 300blk etc)

Ok I’m just going to throw this out there as I really appreciate all of the answers thus far. I have been tooling around with the idea of getting an EBR. I really don’t need one. I have lots of bolt action rifles that I generally gravitate towards for just about anything. I use a 20g for clays and birds. And I usually have a S&W on my hip. My problem lies with the fact that I keep waffling between a 9mm and 5.56 . I know every one is probably gonna say buy one of each. But which do you think would be more practical?
I would go for 5.56. You’ll have a lot more magazine and accessory options, as well as parts.

You can also convert to 9mm later on with relative ease using a second upper and a magazine adapter.

Depends on the range you intend to shoot it, among other things.
25 yards out to 400 yards plus? Prefer the possibility of shooting groups like a rifle should? 5.56 would be my choice.

I am real comfortable between 300-500 yds. I’m not struggling until farther than 825, that’s when the right glass becomes very important.

i live in ca. im screwed:cuss:

Explain. I have all sorts of firearms handguns, rifles and shotguns. Some are excellent multipurpose guns others are pretty much niche guns. But all are legal. I know things aren't great, but they aren't as bad as some make them out to be.

I do really like my pistol caliber carbine and will probably pick up another, because why not.
Exactly...Why not!
I have 2 PCC's . 9mm & 40 S&W .........just like I have pistols in both calibers. They really are fun to shoot and cheaper than rifle calibers for plinking

A 4" .357 revolver. It does everything from plinking to SD, to taking medium game at an ethical range.
My 9 year old daughter shot a 148gr WC over 3 gr of bullseye and giggled ( hit paper BTW). My friend Julio shot a 168 gr SWC over a stout load of 2400 (the fireball was the size of a soccer ball) handed the gun back to me and said 'no mas'.

For me, the multi purpose gun I have an SBR AR with three 10.5" uppers. One is the Poodle Shooter - 5.56, the other is the 300 Blackout, and the other is ARSKI in 7.62x39. I can grab the rifle and any of the uppers and I'm good to go. I've actually sold off a couple of ARs recently as I find myself gravitating to the SBR more and more. I have a .22 LR upper that I can drop on there as well, but it's 16". I haven't found a cheap enough short barrel or upper for it yet.
I'd also like to set it up as 9MM, but haven't researched enough on the mag blocks yet.

As you're thinking of a Black Rifle, I'd say go for the 5.56 first.

Since I am a rifle guy intend to gravitate to them. My AR seems to find its way into my hand a lot, partly because it's handy and available, plus it is accurate and enough oomph for me. I suck handgun shooting but do carry my Taurus 605 a lot because it carries easily. For me shotguns are strictly hunting tools. The two things I find myself carring more than any hing else are a sheath knife (currently a cheap cold steel pendleton lite) which I clips on over my belt, and a heavy duty walking stick. Best ones I have found are sold at farm supply stores, 60 inches long, any fiberglass, cut them to whatever length is comfortable. Would love to have a little marlin lever gun in .357 Mag though.

As another stick to beat the horse, a 12ga is probably the most versatile jack of all trades firearm there is. I sold mine awhile back but kept all the shells I had for it, because I will have one again eventually.

I’ll agree, a 12 gauge pump (870, 500-590, BPS, Nova, etc) with a 20 to 22” screw-in choke barrel, four tubes (Cyl,IC,M,F) and a red dot sight can do anything and everything from squirrels to bucks, thugs to ducks.

Stay safe!

I am currently reloading my 4" .357 with 158 gr. Hornady XTP bullets over 16.6 gr. of Winchester 296 (max is 16.7 gr.). It makes a fair fireball too. I load it this way as I have a Marlin 1894 rifle and use the same load in it.

Round here it's an 12ga. 870 Remington firing #12 magnum buckshot. The regular barrel is a 28" with modified choke tube. For dual purpose use around the home a shotgun is, to me, unbeatable. The handgun is my EDC G23.4. The handgun is the absolute last resort. Hope none of use ever have to be in the last resort situation.

Informal target shooting-HS "Victor", S&W M15, S&W M25 .45acp,

This carbine and this revolver can serve in both hunting and self-defense roles.

Marlin Model 1894 SBL, a 6-1/2 lb .44 Mag lever carbine stoked with my handloads using the 270 grain Speer jsp travelling 1500 fps from 16" of barrel, and a .44 Special Ruger New Model flat top stuffed with 250 grain Keith LSWC cruising 950 fps from 4-5/8"...

Over the years I’ve own all types of rifles and handguns in a variety of calibers and I liked them all. Then one day I decided to choose the ones I liked shooting more than the others and sell the rest. I kept my Ruger 10/22 LVT 22lr, Rossi R92 38/357, S&W 686-3 4” 38/357, S&W 60 2” 38/357 and these are all keepers and will handle anything I’ll ever need a gun to do living out here in the woods of Virginia.
