The reenactor caps in theory should work although a lot of people seem to have trouble with them. The preferred caps are RWS/Dynamite Nobel.

While my first choice for musket caps is RWS, I have used a couple of tins of CCIs & found they work just fine. My understanding is that when the CCI musket caps first came out they received complaints about excessive 'shrapnel' from the fired caps, the problem was solved by reducing the number of segments to the flange from six to four.

The original CCI 6-wing musket caps are no more. They have been replaced by the 'new and improved' 4-wing re-enactor caps (it says reenactor on the tin).

Along with the 4 wings, they reduced the power because they were receiving complaints from reenactors of the caps fragmenting while firing blank charges.

I guess CCI sells more caps to reenactors than to hunters, so they reformulated and left the hunters to RWS. This happened sometime last year.

They may work ok with muskets but they are nearly useless in my '63 Sharps breechloader. They just don't have the oomph to make the two 90-degree turns in the Sharps flash channel. Unless you have a hoard of the old caps, your only source for hot caps is RWS.

I've been using the CCI caps with no problems at all.I get them at W-mart when they have them.Right now it's still pretty tough to get anything for shooting, re-loading etc,but things are starting to get just a Weee bit better.I only say this because I was able to get a couple of items from W-mart the other day

That's a good price for 1,000 musket caps.The price is right around the same for CCI and other brands.Also another good source for GOEX powder.Thanks for showing that web site EljaySL.

Is there an advantage to using musket caps instead of regular percussion caps?

Some guns come with musket nipples, so yeah, pretty much going to need musket caps. Pretty much all of your civil war era military guns this is the case.

Soms guns (Zoli Zouave reproductions) come with both nipples and you can use either.

Sometimes people swap out regular nipples for musket nipples if they're trying to solve an ignition problem. This is usually overkill but I did it myself with a Howdah pistol that was problematic. Went from 0% to 100% reliability with 777 powder. There are other ways to solve this but I already have a ton of musket caps and not that many things to use them and Pedersoli makes musket nipples for it so why not?

Davepool, I've converted most of my sidelocks to musket caps because they are so much easier to handle (deer hunting with cold hands). Secondary to me was that they were hotter, I bought my last batch before the reenactors.
