I've been shooting, hunting, collecting, and carrying for more years than I can remember, but when my bro asks me which general, overall 9mm semi auto he should buy on a budget, I come up blank. I guess I've been in the game too long to be truly objective.

The brands I suggested he look at are Ruger and S&W, but now I'm rethinking.....also CZ, Beretta, Springfield Armory.......?

He's not opposed to a nice used gun, and he's pretty open minded about the subject, which is nice. He has none of the preconceived ideas that many of us have.

    Any other ideas?

Steer clear of both of those. The 24/7 sucks, I've had one and dumped it. The sigma has never had a good reputation, go with the M&P if you are buying a S&W.

The sigma is fine and a hell of a deal. Just do a youtube trigger job on it and you're all set.

    But you can't beat a CZ75b.

Tell him to wait until he has about $100-$150 more saved up and buy an M&P or a Glock. That's what I'd do!

The link I posted has a M&P9 for $460. With shipping/transfer fees it should still come out to only about $50 over his top end (ish) price.

Seriously OP, look at a Glock or a M&P. Nothing else at this price point even compares. If you would like more info, PM me and I'll direct you to it.

The Sig 2022 falls into your price range and is often overlooked from lack of exposure.

Everyone I've shot has been very accurate and had a very clean trigger. It is definitely the value leader in the Sig lineup as it's development cost was covered in a large overseas contract

Used SIG, Beretta, Glock, CZ, or a new Rock Island 1911 9mm. Taurus, Ruger both make OK revolvers, auto pistols not so much, Sigma with a horrible trigger and a trigger job = a slightly less crappy trigger or an unsafe firearm. There are plenty of police trade ins / used pistols that are good deals on a Quality firearms. I almost forgot, FNH has some of the best new pistols for around the top of your price range. http://www.impactguns.com/store/818513003711.html

    jame,
I need a semi-auto 9mm myself.....and I know when I buy one it will be a Glock 19(gen3) but they are above the price range you gave.
I've had a "thing" for the new S&W SD9 ever since they came out. Its a great combo of the M&P and Sigma that has gotten pretty good reviews and seem well liked. Locally I can get the basic gun package w/ two mags for $369, so it is one for your bro to consider.

Choices in the $300 range aren't that great, but up around $450, you have a ton of choices. You could get a new XD9, or a nice used glock, or a M&P, a SR9, a Stoegar, all kinds of stuff.

Does your brother prefer metal or polymer guns? Does he prefer DAO, SAO, or DA/SA triggers? Will he carry this gun? Answers to these questions will narrow the playing field considerably.

Since only new will do If a heavierfull size pistol is wanted then a Bersa thunder 9 or any of the Ruger P95 series will fit that bill If a lighter carry model then Kel Tech pf-9 and p-11 that can be bought new for around 250 at some desent shope new. Used, glock as abought foll proof. Or some of the s&w pistols like a 59

IIRC, I recently looked at a Ruger P95, 9mm. And the price was $299, + tax of course.
It's a nice handgun. Probably be my next or 2nd next buy. I have 1911's and revolvers. But no 9mm semiautos. Think I need one, hunnh.

I would just pick up a police trade in glock and call it a day.
