Well I didn't read through all of the responces. But the best way to get back at them is to hit the sponsers of this paper. That is the business' that advertise in it. I couldn't find many in a quick search of the online version. A small paper like this probably wouldn't like having its advertisers pestered by a few thousand RKBA people.

Get us a list of advertisers. We could really go nuts on a small paper like this if we spread the word to other forums. Lets hit them in the pocketbook so to speak. This is a perfect opportunity.

Heres the advertisers page, http://www.northcoastjournal.com/adv/

Others just don't have no sense at all ... :D

It's a rather disturbing experience to have satire taken as commentary.

Some folks don't have a sense of humor...

I do understand satire and I have a great sense of humor. But, you guys have to admit that a large number of threads here are very confrontational in their tone. I usually don't respond to many of those, but the attempt at satire on this occaision was obviously missed on my part. I apologize for the huge mistake and will henceforth make Bullseyepistol.com my homepage.

Class Action Suit?

Well, I guess if strange things start happening to those listed in the paper (attempted muggings, burglaries, etc.) I suppose there could be a class action lawsuit against the paper.

It's not the people who are registered to have guns that we ALL worry about, rather the lawbreaker and/or convicted felon who has a gun ILLEGALLY. They are the people who don't care about laws and thumb their nose at authority.

At least the people who are registered care to obey the LAW.

To those people totally against guns, it just might be a person carrying legally who could possibly save your life or the life of a loved one someday against someone who is illegally carrying and causing a major problem.

There will always be guns available, even if guns are outlawed (look at drugs and other things that are outlawed which people seem to be able to get without a problem - in many instances, even easier and quicker than the law-abiding citizen who goes through background checks, waiting periods, etc.). Be glad there are law-abiding citizens who are willing to carry who could save lives if a bad situation develops.

Interesting that the paper is supported by so many casinos. This article, which should just thrill Nevadans, implies Heidi Walters doesn't care too much for slots and the industry as a whole, yet she seems able to back-pocket here "causes" and "intelligentsia" to work for a paper supported by them. Let hypocrisy rule!

As much as this enrages me, I think it's one of those I will fight for your right to disagree with me type of deals.

I say, do not blame the newspaper or the reporter, blame the SYSTEM which allows these kind of records to go public. Write to your senators and congressmen!

The newspapers must have known they couldn't get in trouble as I am sure the editor realized this would be a controversial article. Just as they don't publish names of minors, CCW carriers should be able to gain some amount of privacy when it comes to the public's access to such records.

As for the article itself, I don't understand why the reporter didn't just use fake names.

As someone earlier stated, VA went through this earlier with the Roanoke Times.
VCDL retaliated, and using FOIA (where required) started putting out all the info they could find for the folks doing this (phone numbers, salaries, addresses, building permits, etc) until some of ‘em yelled “uncle”.
I believe numerous folks wrote the Roanoke Times stating if there were ever any crimes that could be traced back to the release of such info by the paper (BGs breaking into homes, stealing weapons, committing crimes with said stolen weapons, etc), not only would they sue the paper, but they would make sure any aggrieved parties involved in crimes resulting from publishing said info knew the crimes committed were the result of the data published by the paper. From what I understand, after a few of said letters the list was taken off the paper’s web site-‘course, the paper’s reason was they could not be sure all the names in the database were correct (I believe over 150,000 names in VA database). Obviously they couldn’t be sure of no mistakes before they published the list, so the reason given was just BS-gave ‘em a reason to pull the list and try to save face after someone apparently realized the paper could be in for a world of hurt legally if crimes occurred due to them publishing the database.

Maybe the CC permit holders in your area (wherever that is-as usual, no location given in your info) should get involved with local 2nd Amendment supporters in your area and pursue a similar strategy?

The rag is published in a small town in northwest California. It's within an hour or two drive from Oregon, on the Pacific coast.

The people in the area strike me as being conservative. Humboldt is one of many counties that issue CCW permits understanding its residents have a right to protect themselves. But there is a small college in the town where the newspaper is published.

Great example of the contrasts within California. The same 101 Fwy that is ten lanes wide and jammed with traffic in the Bay Area and LA County becomes a small two lane road with stop lights in Humboldt County.

The economy appears pretty weak. High unemployment. If the newspaper loses a single advertiser over this, it will sting.

I was thinking of which advertisers would respond. I drive past the casinos since I can't carry on Native American soil (not much of a gambler anyway). They may not care. The bank surely needs depositors and the realty company can't afford to lose any prospects.

(Don't live there, but the Six Rivers NF, the Humboldt State Park and the Avenue of the Giants are simply breathtaking. So I visit.)

Hi Mgkdrgn,

I carry a gun 'cause a cop is too heavy (all those donuts ya know) and full body armor is way to hot here in SC.

Very droll, however, an LEO's extensive training of four hours a year to qualify makes him a benefit in the war on crime, whereas your limited and inferior training of hundreds to thousands of hours range time and study of the legalities of CCW make you as much of a danger to the public as the criminals your paranoia makes it obvious you associate with.

The paper is the North Coast Journal, published in Humboldt County, California. Sorry, but you can not cancle your subscription because it is a free be. The address to the artical is :
http://www.northcoastjournal.com/2008/09/25/pistorl-packing-people/

I went and had a talk with them and he did not regret publishing listed CCWers';, he stated he printed it because it was important/the right of the people to know what the Sheriff was doing and who was armed. I told him that being concealed means being concealed and that listing us endangered everyone on the list. (the last time I was listed my house was robbed with 3 weeks.) That for robbery purposes it was no differnt than listing everyone in the local coin club. Bad move at anytime, your just setting everyone up to be robbed.

Not eveyone one was listed, only those people licensed through the Humbold County Sheriffs Department. No sherrif deputies I know of were listed, thou a deputy DA , and EPD Captin was, but no one else from any police agency I know of. About five of my employees were, and several people I know.

Those posters familiar with me know that I've approached this subject mostly tongue in cheek.

On the serious side, my meager understanding of the Federalist Papers lead me to believe the Founders' intention of the 1st amendment was to keep the harsh light of publicy on the government. It's a sad reflection on our times that the press can be arrested filming the principals of a political meeting in Denver yet the personal lives of the common man seem to be open season. O tempora o mores.

My response:

So now, having been given a road map, when a scumbag breaks into the home or car of one of these law-abiding CCW holders, steals his/her firearm, and kills an innocent with it, the blood is on your hands.

Adds a whole new meaning to the term "yellow journalism".

I think I would share some outrage with the Sheriff's Department for providing the list of names as well. And if a lawsuit ensues, they should be named as well.

someone posted a good comment :

" A woman is hiding from an abuser or stalker. That's why she's packing. Then, a newspaper tells the creep exactly where she is. "

:cuss:

This is exactly why I'm getting into Journalism. I have yet to lose my conscience no matter was place in front of me.

Ya, I know =exactly= what you mean. During my training at Front Sight I was "muzzled" twice .... both time by LEO's.

My Dad used to have a handgun/rifle range when he lived on the farm that a number of sheriff's deputies would use (and were welcome to use.) Range rules- one careless act and you are banned. In six months' time only two deputies and three state policemen were still allowed use of the range. One highly trained professional actually handed a second person his sidearm, in battery, WITH HIS FINGER INSIDE THE TRIGGER GUARD!!!! Dad demanded this person have someone else carry his weapons off the property.

That's just wrong, but I thought that you can look up the details on CCW permit holders in your county? I live in NC and heard that you could see their names and everything! This was one reason why I hesitated on getting one. Anyone else heard this?

I wonder if the paper can be held liable if any of the listed guns get stolen and used in a crime.

Since part of my good cause statement was fear of robbery, would that have kept me off her published list? Glad I'm not living in Humboldt.

I'd say more, but I'm not sure I could manage anything else constructive.

*edit*
I was thinking a big gun free zone sign on her lawn might be fun and realized that would sink us to her level. Putting her in danger, publishing her information, while fulfilling the "get her back" and "teach them a lesson" desire. That's not a good solution. It doesn't solve any problems. It drops us down to her level. It's not setting a good example. It's not helping our cause.

We need to use this for education. Work on getting some privacy laws enacted. Work on being inclusive rather than divisive.
