My first Nutria hunt

We shot the bull for a little after the hunt. Bull had a special date to go to and I haven’t drank since I had cancer. And I also had an hour and a half drive back to the house.
Oh! I did get something else while on the hunt, sunburn on my face. :)

I didn't know you went toe to toe with the C....I'm glad to see you're squared away.

Oh yeah! Sunshine on the water....it shines down....and then it shines back up!

It looks and sounds like an excellent time for you all, great shooting made better with great company. You can’t ask for anything more out of an adventure like that, thanks a million for sharing your day with us!

If you two go back out, let us know about the next bout with the critters. :)

Stay safe.

I had to Google "Mud-Boat" as we in Michigan are ignorant. There just ain't no bayous or mud boats here. (we do have ice boats)
Your pictures showed what looked like solid mud or floating vegetation. If it was mud, it looked like you had to get out and push the boat.
Per web search: Mud boats use a shallow running steel propeller with a good in/out board engine. I guessed it was maybe some kind of jet drive like we used in Viet Nam, but I am wrong. Thanks again for the boat education and great pictures.

We would occasionally see the wake one left when swimming across our lake on the old family ranch in the Texas hill country many years ago, but I never got close enough to really see what it looked like.

Looking at Google they sort if look like a mini beaver with an opossums tail. The hunt looked really fun, I sort of wish they were local so I could hunt them around here.

Stay safe.

Great story! I always find it so interesting what members actually look like as opposed to the image we have formulated in our heads.

My mudboat is built out of 3/16 aluminum with Suburu 72 hp (about 1980 Brat EA 81 gasoline engine) . It is 17 feet long and has a 42in bottom width. It has a Velvet drive transmission built for use with up to 245hp tractor engines. It has 1 to 1 drive and turns a 9x10 stainless steel 2 blade weedless prop. It has a top speed of about 25mph give or take a few mph. The boat was build by a local builder in 1992.

The wetlands we use the boat in consist mostly of floating vegetation. The soil under the vegetation has the consistency of thick chocolate pudding. Mudboats do well in that medium. However they will not motivate in sand , hard dirt, rocks or the like.

Thanks again Gunny. I have recently seen (On You Tube) what you might call a mud boat with an interesting "tank track" type rear drive. It's flat bottomed and can even go over land. The tank track is driven and can be steered. I believe the man was fishing for crab or mud bugs with it. Unbelievable engineering.

Great write up and looks like a fun hunt. There was a good population of Nutria in East Anglia in the UK. Because of the damage they did undermining flood defenses There was a very successful eradication program and the East Anglian Nutria is no more.
A strange thing came to mind when reading the write up. Many, many years ago I read an American gun magazine and one of the articles was called, Cap,Ball and Nutria. I can't remember what the article was about only the title has stuck in my head for all these years.

Pato:
the drive is a 9x10 stainless propeller that turns from a 1:1 Velvet drive transmission. it is like any other inboard boat. It has 1 inch stainless steel shaft that comes out of the transmission thru the bottom of boat to the prop.
