My grip slips

For those that shoot action pistol sports what do you use on your hands to enhance the grip in the pistol. It was cold and extremely dry this morning and no matter how hard I gripped my 1911 it jumped around in my hands. Most of the time this is not a problem but today it was. I noticed it large time as I was practicing. During a match I don't think I would have noticed it.

 

Does your 1911 have checkered front/back straps?

If not add grip tape.

Add grip tape to the grip panels or get some panels with a more aggressive cut.

Grip tape: There are all sorts of options from mild to wild.

I'm using Vicious skateboard tape. It is fairly aggressive.
Will chew your hands up for a while until they toughen up.
There are other options less intense.

Pro-grip or one of many similar products is very popular.

Once you get used to shooting a gun with an aggressive grip texture anything less feels like a bar of soap.

 

Also: I don't mean to insult your experience level but it can be really helpful to have one of the top level guys critique your grip.
I thought I had a decent grip until I took a class from Hwansik Kim and found out how crappy it really was.
Ever since then grip is something I work on as much or more than trigger pull or the other nuts and bolts kind of stuff.

 

Chalk or Progrip or similar product for sure. I sweat a lot.
Also what DDC said. Post a pic from the side of your grip on the gun. Should look similar to this

 

I use pro grip shooting revolvers if I need to but am a skateboard tape fan for 1911/2011 pistols.



2011’s I use one piece and save the template.



1911’s I get a set of cheap panels and sand the checkering off, tape then trim. If the front strap is smooth, I tuck another piece under the front of both sides.



As far as actually holding one that’s a little more difficult for me, without being with you and a firearm. Basically you want the most contact you can have between you and the firearm, least amount of fingers/palm not touching surface area on pistol. Looks like #4 but slight rotation of support hand can make all of the difference. You can go CW/CCW a bit and feel, once you know what your looking for. A couple weeks and it’s natural as you bring the pistol up. My right hand is fairly loose, with my left applying more grip to my right fingers, than the muscles in the right hand, this keeps the trigger finger “loose”.

I agree with folks that say the grip is more important as with a good one things stay put pretty well without any tape or chemical grip enhancements.



However, the better locked together the firearm and I are, the less pressure I have to exert and the faster I shoot, transition, reload,…

 

Skateboard tape doesn't help my weak hand grip the fingers of my strong hand though.

 

There are grips with varying degrees of aggressiveness from different companies. I've used VZ grips quite a bit. Lately I've bought the Lok grip Bogies for my CZ and 1911s. I use Progrip too but sometimes a little less often with the Bogies.
