My mind took a walk with my Mosin and the D166 again.

In researching bullets for the 7.62 x 54r years ago and again recently I came across the D166 bullets and since I have been thinking about them frequently.

I don't know what it is about them but they have an appeal I can't explain other than my imagination working over time with them. I guess they just look like they would fly right in my mind.

I would have jumped on them with an order but I hunt with my rifles and the D166 are FMJs so they are illegal to hunt with.

So here's where I am going with this. How would a guy go about convincing a manufacturer to produce a pin holed hollow point D166 in maybe a 150 grain for deer and 200 grain for Elk?

Maybe a pole I could send to a manufacturer would be a way to start.

D166's are great but I'm not really sure how you could alter them into proper expanding HP's without ruining their accuracy. Making a pin hole won't do it. And if you made them 150 grain they would no longer be D166.

If you want a big hunting bullet for the Mosin I'd suggest you try these out instead:

The diameter is deceptive. The bullet is tapered all along its length so the only true .313" part is at the back end. In a way it's similar to the little belt around the D166, and these buggers are darned accurate out of both Finn and Soviet Mosin's I've shot them with. They're huge and designed to take out big game with moderate velocity. They're more often used with SMLE's and No. 4's but those rifles, like Mosins, are known for a variety of bore diameters and the guys down under seem to have devised these rounds to work well with that problem.
 
I tried to alter the pole to include a spitzer lead point as well but wasn't able to do so.

I just don't find those to be as sexy as the D166 but thank you.

The 150 grain I suggested would only be for the shape of the D166 not so much the weight or history.
Edit: I didn't state expanding, my 165 grain Sierra GKs 2140s straight jack deer up so next year it's 2145s for deer and 2140s for Elk.

I have already written Lapua about a hunting legal D166 not a hollow point.
