Scooted over to Big5 Sporting goods on 50th and Kipling in Arvada CO and picked up a Mosin Nagant for US$89.95.

Complete kit, including bayonet, clip pouches, sling, funny lookin' oil bottle with two caps --what's that all about?

Good wood, nice bore (brought a BoreSnake and borelight along). They let me do a little selecting.

They've also got M-N carbines there.

Sales staff very friendly, helpful, attentive.

Me happy.

Me go fondle it now.

Mmmmmmmmm Mosin-Nagant. Mmmmmmmm.
 
Son of a gun, I live not 30 minutes from there. I may pop over there tomorrow!
 
I have two of the MN`s. I bought both a Big 5. One is unissed, the other has a bayonet on it and it had been used. I got the second one to use as a hog gun. They are accurate, shot the Ram gong with open sights at 550meters.
 
Got an arsenal reconditioned M-N at Big 5 a couple of years ago. Darn things have a monotonous habit of going bang when you pull the trigger. I imagine there are still a few slinging lead in Afganistan.
 
Should buy a couple of dozen and then line your walls with them like the Governor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg. Ahh, Imperial Power at last, even though the neighbor's dog still poops on my lawn.

Love these rifles. My experience with them has been great. I find them to be superb rifles that are accurate and fun to shoot. Good job on finding such a great deal...

Welcome to the club, you'll be buying many more of them. Most of the Mosin collectors I know call it Mosinitis, because it is most certainly a disease.
 
It was the M91/30, but they also had the carbines there for the same price.

It also came with a neat little booklet on care, service, history, etc. It even came in a well-fitting box. Seemed well-packed... almost lovingly. Serial numbers on bayonet, bolt, receiver, magazine all matched, but those are probably importer numbers.

There was a caution in the booklet on reassembling the bolt head. What happens if you do it wrong? (I guess I'll go look over the 54Rdot-net site you-all recommended.)

Got a box (20 rd) of Winchester ammo for it, too, for about US$20. Can't stand not having ammo for a functioning firearm.

Jeeze, I feel like a kid getting his first Red Ryder. Maybe I'll wrap it up and open the box Christmas morning and be all pretend-surprised-giggly-hand-clappy-jumpy-uppy-downy.

I hope that these cheap mil-surp are around when I turn 21, as I was told by the Farmington, NM Big 5 that they will not sell any firearms to anyone who is under 21 years old :(. He said it was a company policy, so I haven't even tried at the Big 5 in Fort Collins.

Good job at finding a good one in their supply. Now the fun part is getting all those little bits of Cosmoline out of every nook and cranny (I know I had fun getting it off my step-dads old Mosin). Congrats on the purchase.
 
07Lway, I hope there's another place in town where you can get one of these fine rifles. If that is the case, then your Big 5's policy is idiotic. Maybe you could try ordering online from AIM or something like that?
 
Seems that Big 5 here has MN's on sale most of the time. I shop at the one in Aurora Co. About 2 years ago I got my M38 for $79.95 and last year (Jan 1--they're 1st gun sale of the year) I got a 91/59 for $89.95 with all matching serial numbers. Both guns shoot great.
They're ammo prices are a little high so I go elsewhere for gun food.

Your picture of the 91/30 shows a bent bolt. You got THAT at Big 5 for $90? Tell me more about the markings on that rifle. Better yet send a picture of the markings. You may have picked up something a little better than usual!

as for ammo - while the cheap surplus is mostly gone (although bulgarian is still around) I would suggest that you reload. its cheap and easy.
 
That is a "Sniper Bolt" but didn't come with the rifle. I figured someone might notice. Too bad it's not a real ex sniper though!
 
i stopped by my local big 5 when they had that sale going, only had one left on hand and it was pretty beat up. I decided to pass on it and hold out for something in a little better shape. Still looking for another one, not seriously though. Maby i should be a little less picky. haha

If you look you will eventually come across one that will satisfy what you want in a mosin nagant. In the mean time, look at this website:

It has some information on each of the models and differing things to look for. To be honest I was lucky on my M38 and M44 (each being the best I have seen from a big 5) but my M91/30s took a lot of looking to find the best looker which is the 1939 Ishevsk (not the MO), heck and a couple hours of driving too!
