No matter how hard I try to keep away from the commie vest punchers (Tamara's excellent description), they keep coming back into my safe.

My favorite are the Bulgie Maks. They may not be as smoothly finished as the East Germans, they don't have the collectible value of Russian MilSurps but Bulgies are reliable and accurate as all out.

Makaholics raise your hands and be counted.

Well, I do not know that I am a Makaholic. After all, I am a safe and sane man who believes in the infallibility of the scientific method.

One thing I have observed is that the little buggers multiply like rabbits! It's a commie plot!

After years of denial one day I hit rock bottom by purchasing three at a local gunshow. I knew it was wrong and did it anyway. I felt so ashamed.

I must admit, I'm a Makaholic.

Makarov is an excellent gun. I love mine. It is very reliable, accurate, and agile. I found it no less fun to shoot then 1911 and Browning Hi Power - and those two without a doubt on top of most shooters list.

I got a Soviet Military Makarov that came in from Bulgaria.

My Bulgy !

Hi, Have bought and sold a couple of Russian commercial makarovs in 9x18mm. But My bulgy with it's pearce grips and it's Hume J.I.T. holster are gonna stay with me forever !!!!........WVleo

Makarovs are great guns.......heres my take on them. Ive had STI's, Sigs, LOTS of CZ's etc.........some quality guns. I love guns that work.....period.

Anyone who doesnt like Maks who has shot/owned/carried one is either a 'Gun Snob", yes.....a gun snob or is in the 1% who really has something that they dont like about the guns.

Yes, My name is Eric and Im a Makaholic..........."HI ERIC".....:D

Shoot well.

I am one too.

I carry mine a lot of the time. Eric and B.I.L. can verify that I shoot it more accurately than any other gun I own.

I am convinced that for the money there is not a better gun you can buy.

I have a Bulgie that is probably the most reliable semiauto handgun I've ever owned or shot. One of my favorite guns.

I only have one so I'm not sure if I qualify as a "Makaholic," but I'm definitely a huge fan.

It was threads like this one on The Fring Line that convinced me to buy a Makarov about 3-4 years ago to see what all the raving was all about. Started out with an EG for $170 (would have bought another one at that price had I known better looking back on it) and later an unissued Bulgarian.

I don't ever recall seeing a posting by someone who regretted buying one but I guess there's a first time for everything. Still looking though...

Count me in.

Talked my youngest brother in on ordering one w/ me from SOG and we both received PW Arms unissued Bulgies for $125.00 in excellent condition.

Couldn't be happier. Something about these guns that is truly wonderful and alluring.

My other brother is somwhat a snob in general and when I called to see if he wanted in on the deal he was certain that anything for $125.00 had to be 'crap'. Oh well, You can lead the horse...

I am definitely not a Makaholic.

They are OK but I can take them or leave them.

By the way, does anyone know where I can Mak number 12? :)

Okay, so I'm just weird ...

After trying a couple of them that came through the range over the years, I can't see what the excitement's about ....

I guess I'd get one before I'd get a Walther PP (I shot a VERY nice PP the other day, with a deep blue finish that was in perfect condition) ... but then, I wouldn't actually BUY a Walther PP, either.

Anyway, I've handled and shot the little ComBlock pistols, and didn't feel compelled to own one. I get more enjoyment from shooting a nicely balanced S&W M10 .38 revolver.

I don't think of myself as a gun snob, either, as I don't presently own a SIG, Beretta, HK ... or even a Korth ... ;)

Unless it's a Single Action revolver ... it's just a tool.:)

To the rest of you guys, however ... enjoy.;)

I bought a Bulgarian Mak and I also put it down at the bottom of my handgun list.......it shoots ok, but so do most of my other handguns...accurate?....so are most of my others.....dependable?...so are my others........I guess it boils down to what a guy wants to shoot, and the Mak is not my cup of tea.......sights and grips are crap.......had to put the Makawrap grips on mine...........but that is all the improvements the gun is worth........

It's my one and only gun so far, and I've yet to shoot it.
Soon though...
Then we'll see if I make that transition from owner to "nut";)

cheers, ab

I own one. It's a decent reliable gun for the money. But one is enough for me. IMO a Centennial or M10 snubbie are more comfortable guns for about the same money.

Bill, where are you getting 2 inch Model 10's for $100 to $150?

I'll take a half dozen. :)

I got a fairly nice used 4 inch last year that was $165+

M2

I bought a 4" M10-5 in excellent condition for $157 three months ago. I bought a 2" M10-9 in very excellent condition about a year ago for $195.

Ok, a little more money than a Mak but $50 one way or the other is still in the ball park for a weapon that will last a life-time. In my opinion the Smith is produced to a higher quality than the Mak with better (for me) ergonomics etc. In addition you get the factory which stands behind the product 100%.

The Mak is a bargain for the money, but it is not in the same class as a typical S&W revolver.

BTW, I paid about $120 for my quite used Mak from AIM. Then I paid $25 for the FFL transfer. Then I found that the last recruit that used the weapon had drifted the sights with a steel hammer. AIM sent me a replacement. The replacement was a little too thick to fit the groove so I had a gunsmith machine it for $25. So a $120 gun cost $170.

The Mak has some nice things going for it. It is reliable and it uses cheap ammo and it can be concealed relatively well. But it isn't a pocket gun so in terms of size it doesn't have a great advantage over the K frames and no advantage over the J frames except for capacity.

I like my Mak and I am not selling it. But I am not buying anymore either.

Bill

I only have 1. A commercial Bulgarian in 380 that I got new in box. Has some of the Miltex special edition type features..such as the squared out tigger guard. Did not know what a Makarov was when I bought it. The gun shop owner strongly recommended it. Was one of the best buys I have ever made. The only reason I don't have another is because of the sights. With better sights I would have a safe full of them. But I will never get rid of this one to be sure.

Got almost 5,000 rounds through mine without a single NOT ONE single ftf or fte, that makes me a big fan. I own two and am always on the hunt for a good deal on another.

Mak deconstructed

I got an unissued Bulgie on a group buy on another forum last year; I had originally intended to keep it as a collector piece of history, but have renewed interest in making this a shooter, and may even have the carry package with improved sights etc. done on it...

...that is, once I'm gainfully employed again.
This involuntary vow of poverty is sucking big time.

 :banghead: :scrutiny:

No Bill I wouldn't put down S&W's.

I have almost as many of them as I have Makarovs.:)
Got a J frame with a Crimson Trace laser about 3 feet from me right now. ;)

I haven't seen one worth buying under $250+ in a while though.

That's too bad about your Mak from AIM.

I got two of the $120 before they ran out and I lucked out.
One was new, it looked unfired.
The second was so close to new it was hard to tell it wasn't.

Some time back I got a couple Maks from SOG.
One was new and the second had more wear than I had seen on a Mak until that time. Not beat up, just much of the finish gone and it had been shot a lot.
It shoots nice groups at 50 yards.:D

The nicest Bulgies ever are on the way right now. I'm saving my money for a couple.:D
