Finally I settled on my first long range rifle...
I flirted with the idea of the 338-378 Weatherby Magnum on a Mark V Synthetic or Accumark...but the price tag and the cost of ammo (at the moment I do not reload) convinced me otherwise, at least for the time being.
So I was able to locate a gun shop with a Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic 338 Winchester Magnum just arrived from the distributor...Weatherby doesn't make many Vanguards in this chambering (especially the blued one) so it is a relatively highly sought after rifle...I immediately jumped in my car and drove 50 miles to get it.
After a bit of hard haggling I was able to shave few dollars and get it for $390 out of the door.
I'm in love with this rifle so far....Later on I did go to the range and fired half box of Hornady 225 gr. Heavy Magnum and 5 rounds of Double Tap 300 gr. Woodleigh....ohh boy.....this thing is worse than a 375 H&H...sharp quick recoil and an EXTREMELY loud bark....the rifle does let you know that is there....the 30-06 and Mosins that I regularly fire are no joke but this is on another level...
Accuracy....hmm...let's say that I was able to get on paper at 100 yards.......all my fault so far....as you know every Weatherby rifle comes with a test target with the name of the technician...
The Hornady Heavy Magnum 225 gr. averaged 3067 fps
The Double Tap 300 gr. averaged 2533 fps
I cannot wait to see what kind of long range results I can get with the 300 gr. Sierra Match...but first I have to improve myself and get more confidence with the rifle...
I was VERY close to get a nice scope bite...
Few pics...
