My New Garand - Greek Rack Grade

While at Camp Perry, I picked up a Greek Rack Grade Springfield for $295 at the CMP North store. The muzzle was listed as a 2 and I think the TE was 3 or 4. I'm not sure why it was considered rack grade, but I wasn't going to argue.

Serial #546XXXX. SA Barrel it looks like is dated 11/54. SA bolt #6528287-SA with "A14" underneath. Stock has "132" painted in yellow behind the rear sling swivel. There is a "P" cartouche behind the trigger guard with no circle or square around it. Dings and some leftover tape markes on the stock, but no other marks. Handguards and stock seem to match. Nylon sling.



I'm a shooter, not a collector. What else should I check out on this baby?

The bullet from a 30-06 round sticks out about 1/8".

Did it take long to find a good one? I'm going to order from CMP soon, almost afraid of what I might get if I order one of the Greek or Danish rack grades. Like you, I'm after a shooter not a collector.

The rack grades were mostly 5+ muzzle - which defines Rack Grade. If you can go to the store, there were some with tighter muzzles.

You really can't go wrong for $300. Shoot it for a while a re-barrel for $200 when you have the funds.

OK Fellow Shooters -- Any other things you suggest I check out on this Garand? I'm thinking it might be all original, but I really have no point of reference.

Congrats on your very nice Greek M-1, Ready. My SA service grade Garand arrived from the CMP the day before I returned from vacation and was waiting for me when I got home. Although I paid more for my Springfield than for the Greek, I'm extremely pleased with what I've received.

Now, I need to order some surplus Korean 30.06 ammo from aimsurplus. Anyone used this ammo or had any trouble with it? It seems to be the best deal going for the rather pricey 30.06. Thanks!

I've had pretty good luck with the Korean Ball ammo. I also shoot a lot of the Lake City stuff. Lake city seems to produce groupds that are a bit tighter, but it could just be my attitude.

From what I understand, some of the Korean ammo is corrosive. Just be sure to clean out your rifle. I know the lots marked "PS" are supposedly not corrosive, and most dealers will advertise their "non-corrosive" ammo as such.

Enjoy! You can't go wrong with a Garand. They'll definitely keep going up in price and either way, they are fun to collect and shoot.
