This is Wilbur. She's a eight week old GWP. Had her for almost a week now and she's adjusting to life in our family well. I know she's a bit young for this year, but hopefully by the end of the season, I'll have an opportunity to shoot a few birds over her. Since the youngest boy is now in college, I needed someone to tag along in the woods with me again. I've had bird dogs dang near most of my life, but have been without one of my own for several years since I had to put ol' Lefty down. I think this is gonna work out just fine.

I've always been partial to wirehair breeds. The coat is tough, requires minimal maintenance, and gives them sort of a distinguished look. Wilbur looks like a real bute! Congratulations!

That is a good looking dog, I like Wirehairs to. Here is my Wirehair Dachshund & her little sister.

Looks a little like mine. And like you I was without a companion for a few years since the last Golden passed away. Since I had a few years to wait on my Grandson to hunt with me I got a new pup to play with.

He's a 10 month old Deutsch-Drahthaar named Abel.
Perfect family dog, and so far he's doing fine on Rabbits, Grouse, Pheasants, Woodcock, Squirrels, Turkey's and Blood Trailing downed deer. Still has more training to get done before next spring and his puppy test.

I'm getting all verklempt...

My constant farm and life buddy through thick and thin for the last 13 years or so is a little rough-coated Jack Russell terrier named Cracker Jack. She's the best behaved dog I've ever been around and will return from whatever she might be into with a single call, which is unheard of for a JRT. She's got the heart of a lion, with no understanding of her small size. Her favorite activity is chasing four wheelers up at the farm. She runs beside one, bites at the front tire and yelps for the ATV to be driven faster. When she can no longer keep up whilst snapping at the tire and yelping, she goes into full sprint and tries to outrun it (and usually does).

She protects the farm and house alike from all manner of squirrel, rat, mice, rabbit, Water Moccasin, skunk, opossum, feral cat and door-to-door salespeople.

She's just as fast and nimble as she ever was, but she's starting to lose her hearing and she sleeps more than she used to. This brings to mind the fact that she won't be with us forever. I don't think another JRT could ever hope to fill her shoes, so when that sad day comes it's going to take quite a dog to even come close to filling her spot. From Buck's pics, looks like Wilbur would be up for the challenge and I'll bet Able would be just a willing. :)

Enjoy your buddies, guys!

Not to leave you out 303Tom...

My mother has had Dachshunds for as far back as I can remember. That's another breed that's just about all heart, and yours is quite handsome indeed. Her "little" sister is quite handsome as well.

I'll have to see if I can find any picks of Cracker Jack or her "little" sister to add to the thread.

More hunting companion pics!
