here is my new mosin nagant. i just figured id throw up some pics and see what you guys thought. i have completely taken it apart and cleaned it up and HOLY SH*T does the bolt work smoothly now. i cant wait to run a few rounds through it and see if the smooth operation stays, or if it starts to stick again. hopefully a good cleaning was all it needed. oh, the last pic is my fav.

Aw, man. Mine didn't come with a Sniperkitty. I got ripped off. Otherwise, it looks a lot like mine...did you snag it at a gunshow, perchance? I just went to two, and they were everywhere, sold thus...rifle, pouch and sling.

Also, I have to say that I always thought that M-Ns were ugly as sin, but they're strangely growing on me. They look like what happens when a musket has a vodka-soaked one night stand with a primitive bolt action rifle.
 
no got mine at the local pawn shop/gun store. actually my girl got it for me for our anniversary. yeah i kinda like them too, at first i thought, who would ever need this huge clunky warclub? but now i like it.

all the squirrels have fox holes dug in my front yard now because of the sniperkitty. its cold out too, its like bastogne for those poor squirrels.
 
how exactly do i find out the arsenal and year?

The year will be stamped on the barrel in front of the receiver. The arsenal mark will most likely be a large star (Tula arsenal) or a triangle with an arrow in it (Ishevsk arsenal).
 
1942r is stamped on it. it has the arrow in the triangle. is that good or bad?
 
The Izsehvsk guns are a bit more common, but overall condition is the most important factor in guaging a Mosin. Your gun is beautiful.

One word of warning, though, don't let the tactical kitty make off with your rifle in the night. He may do something stupid like stick up a fisherman and steal his tuna.

im glad to hear its nice as far as mosins go. if anyone else has pics of theirs feel free to post!
 
i think the upper handguard is a replacement. i dont imagine may'42 rifles being "dolled up" ( for those of you who dont know, stalingrad was in 42)
 
whats the best way to polish or clean your stock. I bought one today and it wasnt as shiny or as purdy as all yours and i wouldnt mind making it look a little better. Cuase a clean rifle is a happy rifle.

Very handsome rifle! The wood grain is much to my liking, and the shellac has a really nice patina to it. Glad to hear it cleaned up so well, also!

I also once had doubts about the Mosin... and like Coronach, they have grown on me immensely. Handling my dad's 91/30 and then buying my own M38 sealed the deal. The more I see 'em, the more I like 'em!

darkknight, good find! The finish is just good ol' shellac. In fact, it's one of the best things about it, since it's SO EASY to refinish or refurbish a finish on these guns. Newly sprayed shellac merges with old layers, covering blemishes and whatnot. It can be removed with denatured alcohol very easily. If a solid wipedown isn't cleaning it up, trying using 0000 steel wool on the trouble spot(s) and then applying a thin layer of shellac, letting it dry - takes almost no time at all - and then repeating.
 
Why did you take pictures of the rifle against a light background? The usual way that I see is to lay it across a dark, preferably plaid, chair or sofa to make it more difficult to see. :)

Nice looking rifle, I hope to get one soon.
 
stupid question, but in the 5th pic down there appears to be a crack in the center of the bolt, my friends m44 has a very similar crack, is this due to wear and tear?
 
its not a crack. its a machined groove with a flatheat screw in the middle of it. it looks like something to line up the screw with.

shes not a russian blue, shes a main coon mixed mutt who happeded to be grey. must be part russian blue due to the similarity. but they have very light striped tails and faint stripes on their face. ill post up pics of the Sniperkitty team in a minute here.
