My review of the Polish P-64

Your review is just about what the Polish Arm said about these little guns. That is the reason they changed them. I just ordered one and plan on going to Wolf to get some springs for the little beast. I also reload and will probably shoot reduced loads in it. I also ordered a CZ 50. I plan on using the P64 as a carry gun.

Nice review ... but I think you fell into the trap of calling a gun inaccurate because you're not familiar with it. 8)

Interesting that you were not finding it to be accurate...Most users report incredible accuracy...Including me.
The two spring changes make the world of difference in how these P64's perform.

Well written review, and thanks for sharing, but I'm pretty happy with mine for the last 3 years.

You hit the nail on the head regarding:
Recoil - although not unmanageable, it's surprisingly stout with stock springs
Slimness - very nice for IWB carry

I've had great accuracy, and have changed out to Wolff springs which made DA tolerable and mitigated recoil a bit.

Like I said in my review, "I am not sure if this is the only reason I was not terribly accurate with it, at this point anyways..." This was my first day shooting it. I am gonna make a couple changes to it and get it out and shoot it some more.

Not saying it cannot be accurate, however, it wasn't accurate for me today. I had one of my brother's try it out too. He did a little better than I, but we werent exactly destroying the 10x.

Sometimes, certain people just don't shoot certain guns well, and sometimes you just need to practice with it more... Time will tell.

I bought several of them, but haven't had the chance to shoot them yet. But I agree in dry firing them the double action is unusable. Can't understand why they would be designed to be so hard in double action yet so light in single action. Seems the double needs to be reduce from 25lbs to about 7lbs, and the single action increased from 1lb to about 3lbs... or something like that...

I too bought them with hopes of getting a great little C&R CCW piece... but discouraged by the trigger pull. I'll buy a few packs of springs and try my luck...

I've heard they made the spring very strong though because the 9x18 used by the Polish Army had very hard primers because if they didn't, they would have slamfires with their SMG's. Don't know if that is true...

I love my P-64, knowing what I know about them, if I didn't already have one, I would buy one in a hot second. I think I gave $139 or so for mine + a few dollars shipping and FFL fee.

Honestly, I really like mine, I can hit pop cans at 25 yards consistantly, which for a pocket pistol is impressive accuracy. The sights were dead on out of the box. I will agree the recoil is very uncomfortable, the 9X18 is a little intense for the size of this pistol. Slide speeds are very brisk, and the slide slaps the recoil stop hard at the end of it's travel, consequently the painful recoil. Don't get in the way of the brass coming out either, it comes out with almost as much force as the bullet. I hear a Wolff extra power recoil springs do tame this down a bit.

I reduced the power of the mainspring on mine a bit, it helps trigger pull some, and ignition is still 100%. I will admit the trigger pull on this lil gal does leave something to be desired. One thing I did with mine to improve the single action was to grind back the engagement point of trigger bar on the sear release. This lets the trigger come back considerably farther in single action before it engages the sear, consequently, much less overtravel. If you have one of these pistols, you know what I mean. This horrendous overtravel on a stock pistol in single action mode may be responsible for quite a jerk when the trigger releases.

The pistol is very well made, fit and finish are very good, with a nicely polished blue finish. The steel is very hard and durable, and the barrel is chrome lined, a feature which I wish was available on more domestic pistols, very easy to clean, and almost imprevious to corrosion.

I could only fault this pistol on two items, the trigger pull, and recoil. Everything else is AOK in my estimation. Kind of like a Walther PPK for 1/4 the price.

I'm going to stuff some ammo for mine, when I get a boolit mold for it. Probably take the velocity down to the 900 fps mark, this should mellow things out alot for general shooting, and reduce the insane slide speeds. Who knows, maybe I'll even be able to find my brass.

I haven't chrono'd mine yet, just guessing here, aren't mak's running 1000 fps plus. The slightly shorter barrel on the P-64 will be a bit less. Come to think of it, I did chrono some mild 120 grainers from my .38 snubby, they were running about 700 fps.

Anyway, as soon as I get a mold for it, I'll work up a comfortable shooting load for it, even if it's 650 fps, it'll still knock over pop cans, and be a lot more enjoyable to shoot.

Nice review. I have two, one older with the bobbed hammer and one newer with the spur. That bobbed hammer is tricky to cock one-handed. Funny, the newer pistol does not have a bad trigger pull at all. The old ones does and its crunchy, too. But the new one feels like 10 or fifteen pounds. Go figure.

I'd like to try one of the newer ones, I wonder if the mechanism is slightly changed? If you look at how a Makarov firing mechanism is designed, the pull of trigger bar pulls the hammer in a fashion so it levers with the compression of the mainspring, very clever, resulting in an easy double action trigger pull. The P-64 works works very opposite, making the trigger pull very difficult for the amount of energy it imparts into the mainspring. It would be interesting to compare a newer P-64 with an older one.

Thankfully, I had a different experience with the P64 than it appears you did.

My P64 could have passed for new when I received it; the finish is flawless, lacking any holster wear.
I also found that I could shoot it far better than I was expecting, thanks to the sweet SA trigger.
