Picked up my 625-8 today. there are many small light scratches in it and was wondering if anyone had some good tips in getting them cleared up. Here is a pick of my small revolver collection. New one is the center one.

Now I want a 610. Then a SRH Alaskan .454. Then a S&W 500. Then a...

Mick, I feel your pain.

Even though I really have all the revolvers I should ever need, .357 6" and 2.5", I find myself justifying my desire for .44, .460, .500, .45 Lc. :(

+1 on armoredman's call. Mother's mag polish works wonders. Use just enough elbow grease to get the scratches out or go bananas and make it look like a mirror. Personally, I just enough if the damage is minimal.

x3 on Mother's...I just bought another can at Walmart the other day. It was priced at a shade over 7 bucks compared to the 4 something I had been paying. I thought the can was little bigger. When I got home, I discovered the new can is now twice as large as the old can.

I am so jealous!!! I waaaanna 625. And a 686, and a 586, and a Model 14, and a model 17, and a model 41, and a model 15, and a model 19, and a model, well you get the picture..........

Yes, got lead I know your pain. need to hit the lottery over here.

Gonna try the mothers polish and see how it works. thanks for the suggestion.

I have been bitten by the bug too, I only have 1 revolver currently (SP 101) but now I want a S&W M642, a K-frame, a Ruger Blackhawk .357, single six, GP 100 6" and .44 Mag Super Redhawk ...

Livin' that dream, too.
I've got ALL the models on a sheet of paper here next to the computer. For "research" purposes only, of course.
And, thanks for the heads up on the Mother's. Was looking for some polish.

If the scratches are fairly deep and not just burnish marks then you may need to do some sanding before using the Mother's Mag polish. But sanding then Mothers is the sort of thing you pretty much want to totally strip down the gun to do. Otherwise the grit that comes off the sandpaper and the abrasive polish will get into all the pivots and other places you don't really want them to go.

Wetordry silicon carbide paper using some water and detergent as the lube and wash away mix works well. And for most things you should have a backing pad of flexible metal folded into the sandpaper. Aluminium pop can material works well for this as it's quite springy Cut and fold in two or three layers of the pop can metal as the stiffening pad inside the folded sandpaper. Using this method along with a bit of care will do much to ensure you don't sand away the sharp edges while shining up your new gun. If the scuffs and scratches are deeper start with 400 grit and work up to 800 before going to the Mothers. Otherwise you can likely start with 600 grit.

The scratches are very light, you can't even feel them. But there are a lot of them.

Now that is just mean. showing me the gun that is next on my list. Thankfully I want a shorter barrel version. possibly the nightguard.

If you can't actually feel the scratches with a fingernail then they are likely more what I consider to be "burnish" marks where pressure just put new scuff marks in the finish.

Depending on what sort of look you want you can either go the Mother's Mag polish for a smooth glossy look or go with fine grade 3M Scotchbright pads for a brushed look. Either will do a nice job of giving the gun a nice overall consistent finish.

This should also indicated that stainless guns are not that scruff resistant. And it's true that they aren't any more scuff resistant than a blued finish. Just that it's easier to "fix" them when they are marked up by "scuffing" the whole gun the same way with the pads or shining it up with the polish.

Enjoy the new toy. And like you I'm envious of shooting4life's 610.

If the scratches aren't that deep you might want to try a little Flitz on them first before Mother's Mag polish or 3M pads/sanding them. I have found Flitz doesn't polish quite as brightly as Mother's and might be just enough to remove the scratches without resorting to a really bright stainless finish (Mother's), or a really matte finish (3M/sanding).

Yes and it's your fault Old Fuff. You'll notice that I still own the 6" S&W M&P Model of 1905 3rd Change that I purchased in 2004. The very same one that you and I exchanged so many messages about back then right here on THR. It's been refinished (somewhere during the past 98 years of it's exsistence) and a basement gunsmith turned the hammer into a "Target" hammer. But it was my first and I'm holding onto it. It was the revolver that got me on my revolver collecting kick. Like I've said before i took your suggestion about pursuing medium sized 38 Spl revolvers to heart. Thanks. Really. My thanks you as well, but I think she's being sarcastic. :uhoh:
