My Stainless ROA Came Today

Went to both Kirst and Howell and didn't see a 45 ACP cylinder for the ROA. It would have been nice.

Ok, I missed the joke somewhere . . .

Kirst offers only a drop cylinder (a cyl that must be removed to be loaded/unloaded) for the ROA.
Howell offers only a drop cylinder (" " " " " " " " ) for the ROA.

Where does the "loading gate" come into the picture?
I don't see that kind of version on either site.

Mike, I have no idea, all of a sudden a loading gate comes into one of the replies? I think sometime in the past Kirst offered one with a loading gate.... ah some machining required. IF I still had my milling machine.... but I don't and I don't need a loading gate. But what I don't understand is why Kirst gets $100 more for the same end result.... maybe I AM missing something :) ?

Thank you WmGeorge. I might have to spring for one.

Anyone - Krist or Howell?

The price difference is probably due to the single firing pin and separate plate that Kirst uses. They advertise ammo use of 1000fps or less. Which is pretty much all the normal shelf fodder not including the + Buffalo ammo.
The Howell is well made as well but is advertised for use with 850fps or less.

I'm not all about making magnums out of open tops but $100 more to allow "all' ammo is good enough for me.

Mike

Mike I am not doubting your statement about the 850 fps, but I can can not find any place on the Howell
website ?
Anyway I have a Howell SS on order in 45 ACP. I have no plans to shot +P or anything close in this cylinder. Thanks for your help.

Maybe I'm using confusing terminology. When I bought my Kirst for my Pietta NMA they didn't offer a loading gate. I received a cylinder and solid back plate.
You could then cut (with a dremmel) a loading port into both the recoil shield of the gun and the back plate (cylinder ring) of the conversion. This would allow you to load the cylinder without removing it from the gun.

Kirst now offers loading gate options with their conversion cylinder.

45 Dragoon is probably right that Rugers can't be cut for a loading port. That I didn't know.

I have 3 R&D conversion cylinders. A five shot for 1860 Pietta Colt. A six shot stainless for ROA. And a six shot for 1858 Pietta Remingtons.
Obviously the 5 shot has thick cylinder walls. Just holding, without weighing the ROA cylinder v/s the 1858 cylinder tells you a lot. The 6 round 1858 cylinder has an angle on the chambers to make it fit in the frame and is very thin between the chambers at the bullet end. I don't push the loads too high for any of them and really don't for the 1858 one!
If I want power I have magnums and two Dragoons!

So, the Kirst conversions for the ROA are all drop cylinders (no matter what caliber). The Remie conversions are gated or not (your choice). All are good for 1000 fps or less.

Unless they have changed their stance, you will find that 850 fps is their stated max. for a round.

I've installed a few of each, but that doesn't mean things can't change.

Mike

PS. Hey Dicky, I hear ya!!

I got my 45 ACP stainless steel conversion cylinder today from Howell, beautiful job of machining and finishing. I test fired in the back yard into a 2x6 backed up by a oak timber block. A little noise, who is to notice? Worked fine and the casing dropped right out. Copper plated round nose lead is all I could find in town. My guess I will need to find some RNL someplace.

Finally got a chance to get to the Range today with my new Toy. Target shows lower left group all 30 grains Pyrodex with .457 ball over lubed wad. The other group in the center.... 45 ACP PLATED round nose lead with Howell conversion cylinder. I did adjust the sights before the ACP. Cold, cold out today. When I get more time I will make some more adjustments to the sights and load.
