Maybe a bit boring, and y'all may think a mite pompus, but the thread about your "First Love" brought this on. So skip it if you will.
When I was a little tad, WW II was in full progress. And cowboy movies were riding high at the local theaters. So I had many toy guns, and thought, at maybe five years old, I knew everything about guns. I knew cowboy guns, Army guns, the German Luger, police guns, and snub nosed revolvers. What else was there to know?
My brother came home from WW II and brought with him a German pistol. It said "6,35 kal." on the side. Dad took it to a local gun shop and found it was a .25 ACP, bought a box of cartridges, and at first chance we hied out to the farm to shoot it at some cans retrieved from the garbage pile. Well, we all tried our hand, and after the cartridges were all expended, the can stood unscathed. I determined then and there to learn to shoot, and to learn about fiirearms.
This the first handgun I ever shot:
I heard of the "Colt .45" and wanted to get one, though I wasn't sure what a Colt .45 was. I finally bought my first revolver, a surplus Colt New Service. Originally a .455 Mounties revolver, it had been reamed to .45 Colt. Reading Elmer Keith at the time, I customized it to a .44 Special:
Then, while stationed at Camp Roberts, California, I went into town (Paso Robles) one weekend and bought this Ruger .357 Magnum:
Well, things just snowballed from there:
