Mystery 8mm ammo

The other day I came across this ammo (see pics) at my local gun store. The box indicates that they're yugo 8mm 196gr FMJ. The problem is this: the box said "15 rounds" but it really had 20, so I'm assuming they used an old sticker they had from leftover boxes or something. The primer end of the bullet has no indications other than 22 and 77. Anybody have any ideas? I know they're 8mm, for I shot 50 rounds through my m48 (and I forgot to clean it right away and developed rust >: ( ) Sorry if this is the wrong thread!

It's Romanian 8mm Mauser ammo. I've had very good luck with it. I bought a batch from aimsurplus almost exactly the same, though mine came on 5 round stripper clips, but was also packaged 20/box. It seems to function great in my M24/47.

Functions fine in my Turk, and came on strippers, too. It has a funny smell, too. LOL. Well, mine may be Yugo, but it's been a few years since I've bought any, so I don't remember.

Yup, Romanian. As you've discovered, it is corrosive, so clean accordingly.

I bought a bunch of the Romanian also when it came out. Packaged in tin cans of 360 rds. , two tins to the case.

I haven't opened every tin, but I seem to recall that every shell I have had to pull the bullet from to re-size and re-seat was a 154gr. flat base bullet.

Good reliable stuff, surefire and corrosive primed.

Treat all surplus 8mm as corrosive. On the plus side its clean looking ammo. How was the accuracy?

My Yugo Mauser likes the Romanian too. I have found it accurate and easy on the shoulder.

Correct. I think you'll find you like it...definitely corrosive, but it's great shooting stuff out of Yugo Mausers.

I'm almost positive the 8-mil I have left is Romanian, and yes, it does shoot nicely out of Turks, too.

The accuracy was wonderful! Everywhere I wanted the bullet to go, it went. I like this ammo for the steel case; there's about 100 people that hang out at the DNR range by my house asking for casings and they haven't been asking me since I started shooting this stuff.

Great, thanks! What exactly makes a bullet 'good' for a specific weapon? Is it the weight? And would that be weight in grains? (still decently new to the weapons world)

That's some good-looking ammo. Definitely good quality control. Romanian stuff tends to be a cut above other ComBloc stuff.

I had about 5 boxes of this stuff, too. Shop only charged $6 for 20 rounds

It can be several things. So sometimes you just have to try different ammo types in your firearm and see what seems to shoot best for you. For me, the Romanian stuff shoots very well from my Yugo Mauser (ie, at 300 meters, the sights set to 300m will be pretty much dead on). Some other surplus ammo I've tried has been a bit high or low or just inconsistent in general; this can be due to systematic under or over loading the cartridge or in the case of inconsistency, poor quality control with variable loads between cartridges.

I see! Thanks for the post I only wonder because one day, 8mm surplus will dry up and was just thinking of the day when I have to hand-load.
